    Abstract: The first acoustic diode (AD), which is composed by integrating a super lattice (SL) with a nonlinear medium (NLM), has recently been proposed to make a one-way street for the acoustic energy flux. This device prohibits the acoustic waves from one direction, but allows the transmission of the second harmonic wave (generated from the NLM) from the other direction. To improve its performance, it is crucial to transfer more acoustic energy from the stop-band of the acoustic filter (i.e., the SL) to its pass-band with the help of the NLM. In this work, a finite difference time domain model is developed to study the dynamic behaviors of the AD, in which a micro-bubble suspension takes the role of the NLM. Based on this model, the method of optimizing the nonlinearity-based AD is investigated by examining its performance with respect to several parameters, such as the periodicity number of the SL, the bubble size distribution, the bubble shell parameters, and the bubble concentration. It is also suggested that, instead of the rectification ratio, it might be more reasonable to characterize the performance of the AD with the energy attenuation coefficients (or transmission loss) for both incident directions.

    Abstract: This work reports the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of a broadband acoustic cloak for the concealing of three-dimensional (3D) objects placed inside an open cavity with arbitrary surfaces. This 3D cavity cloak represents the acoustic analogue of a magician hat, giving the illusion that a cavity with an object is empty. Transformation acoustics is employed to design this cavity cloak, whose parameters represent an anisotropic acoustic metamaterial. A practical realization is made of perforated layers fabricated by drilling subwavelength holes on 1-mm-thick Plexiglas plates. In both simulation and experimental results, concealing of the reference object by the device is shown for airborne sound with wavelengths between 10 cm and 17 cm.

    Abstract: This report explains the use of a complementary series, Golay codes, for probing the impulse response of the external ear. The codes are used to measure both the resonance of the human ear canal, using a sealed sound-delivery system, and to measure the transfer function of the pinna, using a free-field source. With two series of 512 binary numbers, the improvement in signal-to-noise ratio over a single impulse approaches the theoretical value of 30.1 dB [10 log(2⋅512)]. This technique has many of the same properties as maximal-length sequences [M. R. Schroeder, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 66, 497–500 (1979)] , but it has the added advantage that the sequence length is an integer power of two and is, therefore, particularly convenient to use with modern Fourier transform techniques.
