Abstract: A report of the supergene mineral mallestigite, Pb 3 Sb 5+ (SO 4 )(AsO 4 )(OH) 6 ·3H 2 O, from the type locality Neufinkenstein-Grabanz district, Mallestiger Mittagskogel, Carinthia, Austria, is given in order to close gaps that have been left open since its first description. At the type locality, the dump of an abandoned small copper-lead-zinc mine, the mineral occurs frequently in up to ⁓2 mm long clear colourless idiomorphic hexagonal prisms {100} terminated by the bipyramid {101}. Details of the occurrence, paragenesis, physical properties, a FTIR spectrum and X-ray powder diffraction data are reported. Chemical analysis in a scanning electron microscope in conjunction with a crystal structure analysis gave the empirical formula Pb 3.02 Sb 1.06 (SO 4 ) 0.96 (AsO 4 ) 0.97 (OH) 6 ·3H 2 O. An ab-initio crystal structure determination with CCD diffractometer data, Mo K α radiation, and a nearly untwinned crystal proved that mallestigite is hexagonal, space group P 6 3 ,  a  = 8.9326(4), c  = 11.1044(5) Å, V  = 767.33(8) Å 3 , Z  = 2, and gave a final R 1 = 0.0184 for 1632 independent reflections with I   〉  2σ( I ). Mallestigite belongs to the fleischerite group. The structure is built up from [Sb 5+ (OH) 6 ] 1– octahedra which are linked by triplets of edge-sharing Pb 2+ into chains [Pb 3 Sb(OH) 6 ] 5+ extending along a 6 3 axis. Each three of such chains are bridged by triplets of H 2 O and by rows of SO 4 2– and AsO 4 3– tetrahedra alternating along a 3-fold axis and showing very different links to the Pb atom. Pb 2+ is in a strongly distorted one-sided [9]-coordination by O atoms that makes the structure clearly hemimorphic. Structural relationships to the fleischerite group minerals schaurteite, genplesite, despujolsite and fleischerite as well as to synthetic Ba 3 Sn 4+ (SeO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 ·3H 2 O are outlined and changes in the space group symmetry of despujolsite ( P $$\overline6$$ 6 ¯ 2c → P 6 3 / mmc ) and fleischerite ( P $$\overline6$$ 6 ¯ 2c → P 6 3 ) are proposed.

    Abstract: Chenite, a new lead-copper secondary mineral, has been found on specimens from the Leadhills area, Scotland. It is associated with caledonite, linarite, leadhillite, susannite, and other species, on oxidized galena with chalcopyrite. Electron microprobe analysis yielded PbO 74.5, CuO 7.8, SO 3 13.3, H 2 O 4.4 (by difference), sum = 100 wt. %. The empirical formula (based on 14 oxygens) is Pb 3.98 Cu 1.17 S 1.98 O 14 H 5.82 ; the ideal formula is Pb 4 Cu(SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 , which requires PbO 75.2, CuO 6.7, SO 3 13.5, H 2 O 4.6, sum = 100 wt. %. Infra-red spectroscopy showed the presence of only and OH − ions, with no H 2 O. Chenite is triclinic, P 1 or P ̄, with a = 5.791(1), b = 7.940(1), c = 7.976(1) Å, α = 112.02(1), β = 97.73(1), γ = 100.45(1)°, V = 326.0 Å 3 , Z = 1. The strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern ( d, I/I o , hkl ) are: 5.55, 7, 100; 4.32, 6, 1 1; 3.60, 10 002; 3.41, 9, 1 0; 3.30, 5, 02 ; 3.00, 5, 111; 2.80, 7, 12 ; 2.07, 6, 211/21 /1 3; 1.778, 5, 3 /2 3. Chenite forms minute, singly terminated, transparent to translucent sky-blue crystals from 0.1 to over 1 mm long, elongated approximately [032]. Twenty different forms (pinacoids) have been identified on the four crystals studied. A good cleavage on {100}, and traces of a second on {001}, can be observed. Optically, chenite is biaxial negative, 2 V(measured) = 67±1°, 2 V(calc.) = 68° (Na). The refractive indices are α 1.871±0.005, β 1.909±0.005, γ 1.927±0.005 (Na). Dispersion is strong, r≫v. The mineral is weakly pleochroic. H (Mohs) ∼ 2½. D = 5.98, and calculated D x = 6.044 g cm −3 .

Abstract: The crystal structure of uralolite, Ca 2 Be 4 (PO 4 ) 3 (OH) 3 ·5H 2 O, from the spodumene deposit of Weinebene, Carinthia, Austria, has been refined with X-ray single crystal data gathered on a CCD diffractometer. Uralolite is monoclinic, space group P 2 1 / n , a  = 6.553(1), b  = 16.005(3), c  = 15.979(3) Å, β  = 101.63(1)°, V  = 1641.5(5) Å 3 . While previously only isotropic displacement parameters and no hydrogen atom positions were reported for uralolite, now anisotropic displacement parameters were used for non-hydrogen atoms and hydrogen atoms were located and refined yielding R 1  = 0.038 for 3909 observed reflections. Uralolite is built up from corrugated layers [Be 4 (PO 4 ) 3 (OH) 3 ] 4- parallel to (010), which contain Z-shaped groups of four BeO 4 tetrahedra sharing corners via three OH groups and are further crosslinked by PO 4 tetrahedra. Two Ca atoms in Ca(O phosphate ) 5 (H 2 O) 2 coordination and an interstitial water molecule link these layers along [010]. The OH groups and the Ca-bonded H 2 O molecules are all involved in hydrogen bonds with O···O distances of 2.780(2) − 3.063(2) Å and O-H···O angles of 150(1) − 179(1)° excluding a bifurcated bond. The interstitial water molecule displays a distorted tetrahedral environment of O atoms and accepts and donates each two hydrogen bonds. The crystal structure exhibits a C 2/ c pseudosymmetry for the [Be 4 (PO 4 ) 3 (OH) 3 ] 4- layers and the Ca atoms. However, the disposition of the water molecules and an asymmetric hydrogen bond pattern involving OH groups as well as H 2 O molecules are decisive for the lowering of the symmetry of the structure to the true space group P 2 1 / n.
