Notes: Selected Problem Points in the Simulation and Design of Distillative Separation Processes. Thermodynamic simulation represents an important tool in the process engineering treatment of distillative separation processes. The degree of detail in the representation of the real process is orientated upon the question of the stage of process development at which thermodynamic simulation is utilized. For three examples of practical relevance it is shown that an improper representation of process reality in the simulation may lead to ambiguous and even false interpretations. In most cases problems arise when process-relevant functions of single units are not incorporated adequately. It is shown that a Langrange-type consideration of the process avoids most of the problems discussed.

Description: An appropriate immune response against a specific pathogen requires finely orchestrated interactions between the various cell populations within the immune system. At the same time, immunological tolerance to self must be maintained. Dendritic cells (DCs) play an essential role in achieving these dual requisites. They coordinate adaptive immunity by integrating signals directly emanating from both infectious agents and cells of the immune system. Many such signals, especially those from innate cells and T cells, have been extensively characterized. In contrast, little is known about how B cells modulate function of DCs. B cells produce a variety of cytokines, including IL-10 and IL-6, that are known to influence DC function. In addition, immunoglobulins (Ig) constitute the major secretory products of terminally differentiated B cells (plasma cells). DCs express various types of receptors for binding Ig, such as Fc receptors and C-type lectin receptors. In accordance, Igs can regulate DC function depending on the receptors engaged. Here, we review the emerging immunomodulatory role of cytokines and Ig secreted by B cells. We discuss the evidence for how these B-cell derived factors may shape the adaptive immune response by directly acting on DCs. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

    Description: Abstract. A series of iron(II) dithiocyanate complexes containing the tripodal ligands L, [Fe(L)(NCS) 2 ] (with L = 6-Me 2 tmpa, 6-Me 2 pmea, 6-Me 2 -Me 2 uns-penp, 6-Me 2 -uns-penp, Me 2 uns-penp, imine-uns-penp and TMG-uns-penp), analogous to the known SCO complex[Fe(tmpa)(NCS) 2 ] were prepared and investigated. It was possible to structurally characterize [Fe(6-Me 2 pmea)(NCS) 2 ], [Fe(6-Me 2 -Me 2 uns-penp)(NCS) 2 ], [Fe(Me 2 uns-penp)(NCS) 2 ], [Fe(imine-uns-penp)(NCS) 2 ] and [Fe(TMG-uns-penp)(NCS) 2 ]. Magnetic susceptibility and Mößbauer measurements showed that all seven compounds maintain their high-spin states between 300 and 5 K.

Description: Dissolved nutrients (NO3, NO3, NH4, PO4, Si, H2S) and dissolved and particulate oganic matter (DOC, TDN, CHLa, SPM, POC, PN, d13C) were measured on bottle samples obtained during CTD casts along transects in the NE, central and NW Black Sea during RV Maria S. Merian cruise MSM33 in November and December 2013. Dissolved oxygen and salinity and temperature data for the bottla samples were added to the dataset. Metadata are UTC of the start time of the casts, longitude and latitude, and depth.

Description: This dataset provides 37 CTD profiles measured on board of the German R/V Sonne (cruise SO269) in the northern South China Sea, under the project SOCLIS – South China Sea Natural Laboratory under Climatic and Anthropogenic Stress, in August and September 2019. The 37 profiles of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, turbidity, surface irradiance (SPAR) and Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and sound velocity were measured using a CTD Sea-Bird SBE 911 plus, together with oxygen sensor (SBE 43), PAR sensor (Biospherical, QCP-2350 + QSR-2200), and a fluorometer (WET Labs ECO-FLNTU(RT)D). Additionally, dissolved oxygen, potential temperature and sigma-theta (with reference to the surface) were calculated. The 37 additional CTD files complement the physical oceanography dataset (Waniek et al., 2021).

Description: This dataset provides 131 CTD profiles measured on board of the German R/V Sonne (cruise SO269) in the northern South China Sea, under the project SOCLIS – South China Sea Natural Laboratory under Climatic and Anthropogenic Stress, in August and September 2019. The 131 profiles of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, turbidity, surface irradiance (SPAR) and Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and sound velocity were measured using a CTD Sea-Bird SBE 911 plus, together with oxygen sensor (SBE 43), PAR sensor (Biospherical, QCP-2350 + QSR-2200), and a fluorometer (WET Labs ECO-FLNTU(RT)D). Additionally, oxygen saturation, potential temperature and sigma-theta (with reference to the surface) were calculated. The 131 CTD profiles are distributed by 81 stations and aim to study the impact of a growing anthropogenic pressure around the Pearl River Estuary into the northern shelf of the South China Sea towards the deep sea. The dataset was used to study the presence and spatial distribution of natural and synthetic estrogenic compounds and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the Pearl River Estuary and northern shelf of the South China Sea.
