Abstract:
With its 700 000 new residents according to the last population census in 2001, Greece has shown a real demographic dynamism, which corresponds to the economic growth of the country over the last 10 years. Despite the increasing deficit in the natural growth rate, overall growth has occurred as a result of recent settlement of hundreds of thousands of immigrants, mainly Albanians, in Hellenic cities and countrysides. After the important out-migratory flows towards Western Europe, United States and Australia, Greece has at last become a land of welcome. The demographic evolution of the last decade has thus resulted from new migration dynamics both internal and external. New central urban forms have appeared in the suburbs of main cities, while the population mobility has increased thanks to transportation improvements.
