    Notes: We study resonant tunneling in B-δ-doped diodes grown by Si-molecular beam epitaxy. A Thomas–Fermi approach is used to obtain the conduction-band modulation. Using a scalar Hamiltonian within the effective-mass approximation we demonstrate that the occurrence of negative differential resistance (NDR) only involves conduction-band states, whereas interband tunneling effects seem to be negligible. Our theoretical results are in very good agreement with recent experimental observations of NDR in this type of diode. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A Peruvian quinoa core collection, containing 103 chosen ecotypes or landraces, was defined on a geographically stratified non-overlapping sampling procedure. The objective was to determine whether this protocol was correct. Hence, a phenotypic distance matrix among 76 accessions from this core collection was created by calculating the difference between each pair of accessions for each characteristic. These 76 accessions were chosen because they had complete data for eight morphological descriptors. The diversity index was calculated by averaging all the differences in the phenotypic value for each quantitative descriptor divided by the respective range, and considering a matching coefficient for the qualitative descriptors, i.e., 0 for characteristics that matched, and 1 if they did not. The total sum of squares from the analyses of variance for the phenotypic diversity index, based on morphological descriptors, was partitioned between and within Peruvian Departments. The between Department cluster variance was smaller (0.0022) than the within Department cluster variance (0.0144), because accessions with the same stem colour or similar inflorescence type and colour were grouped together irrespective of their Department. This was further corroborated by the average linkage cluster analysis, which was performed on the phenotypic diversity matrix to study the pattern of variation and the relationship between the quinoa landraces of this core subset according to their geographical origin. Within each sub-cluster (based on above qualitative descriptors) accessions were ranked by their Department of collection, which indicated that the sampling method was appropriate for choosing accessions for the Peruvian quinoa core collection.

    Description: Integrated assessment models (IAMs) are commonly used by decision makers in order to derive climate policies. IAMs are currently based on climate-economics interactions, whereas the role of social system has been highlighted to be of prime importance on the implementation of climate policies. Beyond existing IAMs, we argue that it is therefore urgent to increase efforts in the integration of social processes within IAMs. For achieving such a challenge, we present some promising avenues of research based on the social branches of economics. We finally present the potential implications yielded by such social IAMs.

    Description: Low-cost robots are characterized by low computational resources and limited energy supply. Path planning algorithms aim to find the optimal path between two points so the robot consumes as little energy as possible. However, these algorithms were not developed considering computational limitations (i.e., processing and memory capacity). This paper presents the HCTNav path-planning algorithm (HCTLab research group’s navigation algorithm). This algorithm was designed to be run in low-cost robots for indoor navigation. The results of the comparison between HCTNav and the Dijkstra’s algorithms show that HCTNav’s memory peak is nine times lower than Dijkstra’s in maps with more than 150,000 cells.

    Description: Background: Healthcare-associated (HCA) bloodstream infections (BSI) have been associated with worse outcomes, in terms of higher frequencies of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and inappropriate therapy than strict community-acquired (CA) BSI. Recent changes in the epidemiology of community (CO)-BSI and treatment protocols may have modified this association. The objective of this study was to analyse the etiology, therapy and outcomes for CA and HCA BSI in our area. Methods: A prospective multicentre cohort including all CO-BSI episodes in adult patients was performed over a 3-month period in 2006--2007. Outcome variables were mortality and inappropriate empirical therapy. Adjusted analyses were performed by logistic regression. Results: 341 episodes of CO-BSI were included in the study. Acquisition was HCA in 56% (192 episodes) of them. Inappropriate empirical therapy was administered in 16.7% (57 episodes). All-cause mortality was 16.4% (56 patients) at day 14 and 20% (71 patients) at day 30. After controlling for age, Charlson index, source, etiology, presentation with severe sepsis or shock and inappropriate empirical treatment, acquisition type was not associated with an increase in 14-day or 30-day mortality. Only an stratified analysis of 14th-day mortality for Gram negatives BSI showed a statically significant difference (7% in CA vs 17% in HCA, p = 0,05). Factors independently related to inadequate empirical treatment in the community were: catheter source, cancer, and previous antimicrobial use; no association with HCA acquisition was found. Conclusion: HCA acquisition in our cohort was not a predictor for either inappropriate empirical treatment or increased mortality. These results might reflect recent changes in therapeutic protocols and epidemiological changes in community pathogens. Further studies should focus on recognising CA BSI due to resistant organisms facilitating an early and adequate treatment in patients with CA resistant BSI.
