    Notes: Comparisons were made between 92 male prisoners over the age of 50 and 539 younger male prisoners at Utah State Prison, and between groups of first and muhiply incarcerated ot Utah and younger inmates. The older prisoners committed more crimes against persons, fewer property crimes, were older at first arrest, and were less socially deviant, impulsive, and hostile. The first incarcerated older inmates were found to have more often engaged in crimes of violence. were less involved in a criminal way of life, and were the best adjusted of all the groups. The multiply incarcerated older inmates were found to resemble the younger inmates in terms of a criminal way of life and were not different from their younger counterparts in their adjustment.

    Notes: Abstract Thirteen Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis strains obtained from nose and hand of two employees and one patient of a medical ward as well as two S. hemolyticus strains were analysed according to their restriction fragment length patterns (RFLP) by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) using the restriction enzymes Sma I and Sst II. Species identification of the isolates was performed by a system which includes 20 biochemical reactions. Furthermore, the antibiotic resistance patterns of the strains were determined. While several isolates exhibited identical antibiotic susceptibilities and biochemical profiles, differences in the RFLP were obtained. In three cases, S. epidermidis strains colonizing the skin showed an identical restriction profile as isolates from the mucous membranes of the same person. We concluded that the analysis of staphylococcal strains by PFGE is an important epidemiological tool with high discrimination power.

    Notes: Abstract A hospital warm water system was monitored for the presence and distribution of legionellae. Subtyping of ten selected Legionella pneumophila isolates, originating from four different sites in the system by using serogroup specific antisera in an indirect immunofluorescence test, revealed that nine of the ten isolates belonged to serogroup 6, while the remaining one was serogroup 10. Two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific for a subgroup of serogroup 6 strains were further used for characterization. None of the strains reacted with these mAbs. Genome analysis by elaborating NotI profiles using the pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) technique revealed that nearly all serogroup 6 isolates derived from different sites, including a new building connected by a ring pipe, were identical according to restriction fragment patterns. The patterns were distinguishable from those of the two L. pneumophila serogroup 6 reference strains, and from that of the L. pneumophila serogroup 10 isolate. These data argue for a relatively homogeneous L. pneumophila serogroup 6 population in the entire water system.

    Notes: The unified particle simulation of the entire glow discharge including plasma bulk and electrode sheaths suffers from the bad representation of particles in the cathode fall and/or from expensive computing time. To improve the efficiency and reliability of such simulations we develop a splitting procedure for the simulation particles that increases the sampling rate in critical phase space regions. The technique is demonstrated with the help of a simplified model of a dc glow discharge. Simulation particles representing ions and electrons are traced from electrode to electrode by moving the particles in self-consistent fields. For comparison, the same model of the discharge is analyzed in the framework of transport equations. To improve the spatial density profiles of the macroscopic equations, we accounted for nonlocal effects by adjusting the Townsend ionization coefficient with the help of the particle simulation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The accessibility of the nasal airway allows important examination of the airway mucosa in health and disease. However, the current methods for nasal challenge and lavage in children suffer from several shortcomings. In the present study, we have assessed the utility of a recently developed “nasal pool”-device in 7–9 year old children, and explored the ability of the nasal mucosa of these school-children to mount a plasma exudation res-ponse (lumenal entry of bulk plasma). Isotonic saline was instilled and maintained (1 min) as a “pool” in the unilateral nasal cavity. Recovery of the “pool” (lavage fluids) was determined. Concomitant challenge and lavage was then performed by exposing the nasal mucosa to a “pool” of iso-tonic saline and histamine (40-400 μg/ml) for 2 min. “Pool” fluids were analysed for α2-macroglobulin as an index of microvascular epithelial exudation of bulk plasma. The school-children successfully managed to carry out nasal lavages as well as concomitant histamine challenges and lavages with the “nasal pool”-device. The recovery of the nasal lavage fluids was almost quantitative (〉85%) and thus well reproducible. Histamine produced significant exudation of bulk plasma (α2-macroglobulin), We suggest that the “nasal pool”-device is well suited for challenge and lavage of the nasal airway mucosa in children above 6 years of age. and conclude that lumenal entry of multipotent humoural protein-systems may be an im-portant first line respiratory defence mechanism in children.

    Notes: The problem of multiple time scales in modeling plasmas by dynamical particle simulation methods, such as the particle-in-cell (PIC) method, is well known. One important cause is the large ratio of the ion and electron mass. Ways to overcome this problem are the implicit PIC, or simply, the use of a reduced ion–electron mass ratio. However, these methods are not acceptable in modeling dc glow discharges by the PIC-Monte Carlo hybrid simulation technique. Therefore, a new method called asynchronous cycling was developed, which manipulates the synchronization of the electron and ion simulation cycles. It allows a 50 times faster convergence due to direct reduction of the different time scales for situations in which the changes of macroscopic quantities are slower than the ion movement. This is demonstrated by the modeling of a complete one-dimensional dc glow discharge including cathode fall, plasma bulk, and anode fall. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Previous studies involving adults have demonstrated that airway glucocorticosteroids inhibit plasma exudation and eosinophil activity in allergic rhinitis. This study explores the possibility that plasma exudation, exudative responsiveness, and the occurrence of eosinophil activity-related proteins are glucocorticosteroid-sensitive nasal mucosal indices in allergic children. Using a placebo-controlled, parallel-group design effects of nasal budesonide (64 µg per nasal cavity b.i.d) were determined in children with seasonal allergic rhinitis. Nasal lavage fluid levels of eotaxin, eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), and α2-macroglobulin, indicating plasma exudation, were determined, the latter with and without challenge with topical histamine. Nasal lavage fluid levels of α2-macroglobulin and ECP increased significantly during the pollen season, and the acute plasma exudation response to histamine was significantly greater during than outside the season. There was a trend towards a seasonal increase in nasal lavage fluid levels of eotaxin. Budesonide significantly inhibited the seasonal increase in α2-macroglobulin as well as the exudative hyperresponsiveness to histamine. Any tendency of increases in mucosal output of eotaxin and ECP was abolished by the glucocorticosteroid treatment. We conclude that mucosal exudation of plasma, as a global sign of active inflammatory processes, is a glucocorticosteroid-sensitive facet of allergic rhinitis in children. Exudative hyperresponsiveness, potentially caused by several weeks of mucosal inflammation, emerges as a significant feature of allergic rhinitis in children, and its development is prevented by local treatment with a glucocorticosteroid drug. The seasonal increase in ECP and the trend for an increase in eotaxin were absent in the glucocorticosteroid-treated subjects.
