    Soft magnetic properties of composite-anisotropy CoNbZr/ceramics multilayers (invited) : 37th Annual conference on magnetism and magnetic materials (1993)

    Notes: CoNbZr/ceramics multilayered films, the metal layers of which have sequentially changed anisotropy directions, were investigated. Such newly processed film is called "composite-anisotropy multilayer film.'' The effects of this new processing on soft magnetic properties were studied. In the case where the shift angle in the easy magnetization direction between neighboring CoNbZr layers is 45°, a smooth B-H loop with low coercivity was obtained. Furthermore, annealing from 200 to 400 °C resulted in high permeability (μ') of 1000–1500 and excellent frequency responses of μ' above 100 MHz in all directions in the plane of the film. These results could be explained in terms of magnetic interactions of the CoNbZr magnetic layers which are in close contact with one another across the intervening ceramics layers. These findings indicate that such composite film has many advantages over conventional uniaxial multilayers in applications to magnetic devices. Since these characteristics are thought to be very significant for microdevices composed of disc-shaped magnetic cores, we fabricated a planar microtransformer composed of circular spiral coils and disk-shaped magnetic cores, 2.4 mm in size, using photolithographic technology. The input–output voltage ratio, VOUT/VIN, was measured in the frequency range of 2–40 MHz and showed a high value of 0.83 at 40 MHz.

    Notes: In the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror, ion cyclotron range of frequency heating has been used effectively in the central cell. The ion temperature becomes several keV and an ion beta value is a few %. Semiconductor detectors are used for measurement of high energy protons in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the magnetic field line. Observed pitch angle distribution peaks near the cyclotron resonance layer and estimated pressure profile in the axial direction is consistent with the profile from a diamagnetic loop array. Strong temperature anisotropy can drive an Alfvén ion cyclotron (AIC) mode unstable. In a typical discharge, the temporal evolution of the endloss high energy ions has strong correlation with that of the AIC-mode amplitude. The enhancement of the loss of high energy ions due to the AIC mode is suggested. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Cadmium fluoride single crystal layers have been grown on CaF2/Si(111) or Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The structures are expected to have attractive electronic properties. The growth was monitored by reflections high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) techniques. A distinct ((square root of)3×(square root of)3) R30° superstructure has been observed on the CdF2(111) surface at growth temperatures below 150 °C. RHEED intensity oscillations indicate a two-dimensional growth mode of CdF2.

    Notes: We measured the germinating and inactivating effects of reciprocal pressurization (consisting of six cycles of 5 min compression and rapid decompression) (RP) on bacterial spores compared with the effects of continuous pressurization (CP) by using heat sensitivity (70 °C, 30 min) as a criterion for germination. There was no significant difference in the germination of spores by RP and CP, but there was a significant difference in spore inactivation by RP and CP except for 200 MPa-25 and 35 °C. The number of germinated spores was more than the number of inactivated spores following RP and CP. These results indicated that compression could initiate germination, whereas rapid decompression could not initiate germination, but could inactivate the germinated spores. Thus, RP was more effective than CP in inactivating spores.

    Notes: The effects of initial concentration [104–109 colony forming units (CFU) mL−1] on the inactivation of vegetative cell suspensions (Escherichia coli) and spore suspensions (Bacillus subtilis) by hydrostatic pressure treatment were investigated. The inactivation rates of E. coli and B. subtilis decreased as the initial concentration of cell and spore suspensions increased. In the practical application of hydrostatic pressure treatment, it was considered that the initial concentration of the bacteria suspensions should be as low as possible.

    Notes: Various allergic diseases have been described in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In the present study, we evaluated the prevalence of allergic disease and serum IgE levels in 36 children of 26 mothers with SLE. None of the subjects had any rheumatic symptoms. There was at least one type of allergic disease in 28 (78%) of the 36 children of mothers with SLE, as compared with 30% in Japanese control children (P〈0.01). The prevalence of atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma was higher in children of mothers with SLE (64% and 28%) than in controls (19% and 9%) (P〈0.01, respectively). Fourteen of the 36 subjects (39%) had higher levels of serum IgE than those of normal range for age-matched healthy Japanese children with no atopic family disease in the immediate family history, and these children had atopic disease. Among the 14 children with high serum-IgE levels, seven had neither immediate nor remote family history of atopic disease, while the others had an immediate family history of atopic disease. We think that genetic factors may influence the presence of allergic disease in children of mothers with SLE, and that the increased serum IgE levels in children of SLE mothers with no allergic family history may be a part of subclinical immunologic abnormalities related to SLE.

    Notes: Fecal IgE levels were investigated in 165 asymptomatic infants at 1 month of age under two nutritional regimens, breast-feeding and formula feeding, and the possibility of predicting by fecal IgE levels the onset of atopic disease was studied in these infants. IgE levels were measured by time-resolved fluoroimmunometric assay. IgE antibodies are detectable in fecal extracts, and we have already reported that IgE levels are increased in food-allergy patients after administration of food allergens, and this increase in fecal IgE levels may be a specific consequence of the local immune response to food-allergen stimulation in the gut mucosa. The presence of atopic disease and the feeding method during the nursing period were surveyed by questionnaire in 89 of these 165 infants when they were 18 months old. In an analysis of the present results, IgE values above 0.015 U/ml, the lower limit of measurement, were considered to be high. Forty-eight (29%) of the 165 subjects showed a high fecal IgE level. Thirty-seven (35%) of 105 formula-fed infants had high fecal IgE levels, whereas only 11 (18%) of 60 breast-fed infants had high levels (P〈0.05). With respect to atopic family history, 30(39%) of the 77 infants with atopic family history had high fecal IgE levels, as compared with 18 (20%) of the 88 infants without atopic family history (P〈0.01). When the relationship between fecal IgE levels at 1 month of age and presence of atopic disease in the first 18 months was investigated, the prevalence of atopic disease was significantly higher in subjects with high fecal IgE levels (50%) than in subjects with low fecal IgE levels (14%) (P〈0.01). We conclude that cow's milk proteins or dietary antigens in breast milk consumed by infants, in addition to genetic predisposition, may stimulate IgE immune response in the developmental gut mucosa, and that fecal IgE level at 1 month of age is an important and noninvasive factor for predicting the development of atopic disease during infancy and early childhood.

    Notes: Background: The symptoms of a 56-year-old man with systemic mastocytosis became worse with exposure to sunlight. We evaluated mast-cell-derived mediators and cytokines before and after exposure to ultraviolet light in the patient. Methods: The patient was irradiated with middle-wave ultraviolet light, so-called ultraviolet light B, and the levels of mediators and cytokines were measured serially. The point mutation Asp816Val in c-kit was investigated by analyzing polymerase chain reaction products from the complementary DNA of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Results: Before irradiation, the levels of mast-cell-derived mediators and metabolites were elevated. Among various cytokines measured, including soluble c-kit and stem cell factor, only the level of nerve growth factor was elevated. After irradiation, the nerve growth factor level was further increased along with the levels of mast-cell-derived mediators and metabolites. The point mutation Asp816Val in c-kit was not detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Conclusions: Middle-wave ultraviolet light may activate mast cells to release nerve growth factor and mediators in systemic mastocytosis.
