    Notes: At low oxygen potentials, YBa2Cu3O7−x decomposes by chemical reactions involving reduction. The results of this study show that the compound also decomposes at higher oxygen potentials. The initial decomposition products were found to be Y2BaCuO5 and a Ba-Cu oxide phase. The Ba-Cu phase was found to be a peroxide-type and the decomposition can be described by a chemical reaction involving oxidation: 4(YBa2Cu3O7−x)+(1/2 − 3/2δ +2x)O2(arrow-right-and-left)2Y2BaCuO5+3Ba2Cu3O6−δ+CuO. At 800 °C the equilibrium pressure for this reaction is slightly 〈1 bar, and the enthalpy change is ∼80-kJ/mol Y123. This result is not consistent with the conclusions drawn from some other studies of the stability of the superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O compounds, and the differences are discussed.

    Notes: Objectives To determine if placental syncytiotrophoblast microvillous (STBM) membranes contain factors which could cause the maternal endothelial cell disturbance thought to be central to the pathophysiology of the maternal syndrome of pre-eclampsia.Design STMB membranes isolated from pre-eclamptic or normal placentae were added to cultures of endothelial cells and their effect on the proliferation (measured by 3H-thymidine incorporation), viability (measured by 51Cr release) and growth as a monolayer of these cells was determined. Membranes prepared from red blood cells, and nonendothelial adherent and nonadherent cell lines were used as specificity controls.Subjects STBM membranes were isolated from the placentae of primigravid women, 10 having caesarean sections for breech presentations and 10 for pre-eclampsia.Results STBM membranes from the placentae of normal and pre-eclamptic women suppressed endothelial cell proliferation to a similar extent and disrupted the cell monolayer to form a honeycomb-like pattern. This change in morphology was seen before significant endothelial cell death occurred. Red blood cell membranes had no effect on either endothelial cell proliferation, viability or monolayer integrity. Endothelial cells from human umbilical arteries and bovine adrenal capillaries were similarly suppressed, but comparable concentrations of STBM membranes had no effect on nonendothelial cell lines.Conclusions Syncytiotrophoblast microvillous membranes specifically interfered with endothelial cell growth in vitro. Our results demonstrate that there are trophoblast products which could cause the maternal syndrome of pre-eclampsia through endothelial cell damage.

    Notes: The possible existence of a dopamine D2 receptor-mediated regulation of dopamine release was investigated in the goldfish retina. Isolated retinas were preloaded with [3H]dopamine and superfused with D2 dopamine receptor agonists or antagonists to determine if there was an effect on [3H]dopamine release. The D2 receptor antagonist sulpiride increased both baseline [3H]- dopamine release and [3H]dopamine release induced by an increase in extracellular potassium concentration. The D2 receptor agonists LY-171555 and RU-24213 did not reduce baseline [3H]dopamine release but completely inhibited [3H]dopamine release induced by an increase in [K±]o. This action of the D2 agonists was blocked by sulpiride. These studies demonstrate the existence of D2 receptor, possibly autoreceptor, regulation of dopamine release in the teleost retina.

    Notes: The effects of niobium doping on the hysteresis parameters of sol—gel Pb1.1−(x/2)(Zr0.53Ti0.47)1−xNbxO3 (0, x, 0.05) have been reported for two sets of films with analogous grain size and degree of (111) texture but with different surface microstructures. For both sets, a strong continuous decay of the remnant and maximum polarizations and slope of the hysteresis loop at the coercive field was observed with increasing niobium concentration. The field dependence of the remnant polarization for any given niobium-doped film was identical to the functional field dependence of the undoped reference film, if multiplied by a niobium-concentration-dependent constant. Although the maximum and remnant polarizations decayed as the dopant level increased, their difference remained the same value as that of the undoped film at any given field. The width of the loop (at zero polarization) was insensitive to the niobium concentration at any given field. A linear increase in coercive field asymmetry (up to 40 kV/cm) was observed with niobium addition, yet was field independent and, thus, electrostatic in origin. Niobium governed switching through a reduction of the number of switching domains, without changing the total lattice polarization response. Microstructure-related effects on switching, such as decreased volume fraction of ferroelectric material or field-screening effects due to the presence of a pyrochlore second phase, were eliminated as the origin of the hysteresis changes. This paper has demonstrated how hysteresis features and their field dependencies can be used to separate the effects of niobium-induced microstructural changes from niobium lattice doping influences on the hysteresis loops.

    Notes: We have directly and passively generated a 290-nm, 600-ps pulse train from a Ce:LiCAF laser pumped by the fourth harmonic of a conventional 10-ns Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. This simple, all-solid-state, short-pulse laser has been realized by employing a recently studied, self-injection-seeding pulse-train generation scheme using Ce:LiCAF, a tunable ultraviolet laser medium. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Scrotal hair in infancy is extremely rare. We report identical twins who had scrotal hair at 1 month of age. The condition is likely owing to hypersensitivity of the scrotal hair follicles to transiently elevated androgen levels in the first few months of life. Our patients are the youngest reported in the literature. Most cases are sporadic. The present cases suggest that the condition can be familial.

    Notes: Objective To investigate the hypothesis that, should there be an increase in deported syncytiotrophoblast microvillous membrane fragments in pre-eclampsia, it may cause maternal vascular endothelial dysfunction.Design Syncytiotrophoblast microvillous membrane (STEM) vesicles, prepared from normal term placentae, were perfused through small subcutaneous arteries isolated from fat biopsies obtained at caesarean section. Endothelial function of these arteries was studied by determining acetylcholine-induced relaxation after preconstriction with noradrenaline. As controls, physiological buffer or red blood cell membranes in physiological buffer were used and endothelial function similarly estimated. Transmission electron microscopy was performed on arteries after perfusion.Sample STBM vesicles, isolated from the placentae of three healthy women undergoing elective caesarean section for reasons unrelated to pre-eclampsia, were suspended in physiological buffer. Subcutaneous fat arteries were obtained from a separate group of 13 normotensive pregnant women, also undergoing elective caesarean section at term.Results Perfusion with red blood cell membranes or physiological buffer had no significant effect on the concentration dependent relaxation in arteries preconstricted with noradrenaline. However, after 2 h perfusion with STBM vesicles, arteries showed a significant reduction in relaxation to acetylcholine, indicative of altered endothelial function. Transmission electron microscopy of arteries perfused with STBM vesicles confirmed endothelial disruption.Conclusions STBM vesicle perfusion specifically altered the relaxation response of preconstricted maternal subcutaneous fat arteries to acetylcholine, suggesting an alteration in endothelial dependent relaxation. Deported microvilli may therefore be capable of producing endothelial cell damage and endothelial dysfunction observed in the maternal syndrome of pre-eclampsia.

    Notes: Objective To investigate the effects of syncytiotrophoblast microvillous membranes (STBM) in concentrations, found in vivo in women with pre-eclampsia, on endothelial function in isolated resistance arteries.Setting Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Huddinge University Hospital, Stockholm.Sample Twenty-nine myometrial resistance arteries isolated from biopsies of healthy term pregnant women, obtained during caesarean section.Methods The myometrial arteries were mounted in a pressure arteriograph and perfused intraluminally for three hours with STBM (20 to 2000ng/mL) or with erythrocyte membranes or physiological salt solution as controls, all substituted with 0.5% bovine serum albumin. Bradykinin concentration-response curves were performed before and after perfusion.Main outcome measures The bradykinin concentrationresponse curves were fitted to the Hill equation and maximal dilation and the pEC50 values were determined from these fits. Differences within groups were analysed with a paired Student's t test. Electron microscopic evaluation of the endothelium was performed.Results Neither STBM nor erythrocyte membrane perfusion affected maximal dilation or the pEC50 values of the bradykinin concentration-response curves at any concentration. Examination by electron microscopy showed no obvious damage to the endothelium after perfusion with STBM or erythrocyte membranes.Conclusion Perfusion with STBM in concentrations up to 100 times those reported in pre-eclampsia has no significant effect on bradykinin-mediated dilation in isolated myometrial arteries.
