    Notes: Hydrogeological problems which involve the determination of lateral variations in structures or physical properties may be solved with electrical resistivity gradient profiling if there are significant variations in electrical resistivity, spatially or temporally. The method is explained, evaluated for sensitivity, compared with other methods, and applied to the location of volcanic dike zones that are impounding an anomalous water body near Schofield, Oahu, Hawaii. From the electrical soundings and other independent data, the lateral positions of the boundaries have been refined and their nature estimated.

    Notes: Most of the data recorded at seismological observatories are essentially noise, not signal. One way to achieve a higher information density is to trigger the seismograph, as in strong-motion accelerographs. This approach loses the first motion—not important for earthquake-engineering studies, but very important for studies of focal mechanism. To eliminate this defect, various cumbersome techniques have been used, such as closed-loop tape-recording.Here we describe a seismograph that records only the signals and does not lose the first motion. Our procedure uses a microprocessor (MC6800) to monitor the energy level adaptively, uses a solid-state memory like a large shift-register, and has the microprocessor trigger recording from the solid-state memory onto a tape cassette whenever a signal (as defined by energy level) is recognized by the microprocessor.A field station consists of a crystal clock, seismometer, amplifier, analog-to-digital converter, Parallel Interface Adapter (PIA), MC6800 microprocessor, 8K solid-state memory, Asynchronous Communications Interface Adapter (ACIA), cassette tape-recorder, and battery. The duration of operation depends upon the frequency content of data, the sampling rate used, and the frequency of events. The design criteria used for the stations of the first field system are a 1 Hz to 10 Hz bandpass amplifier, 8-bit digitization, 5 samples per cycle of highest frequency content, and quality tape cassettes. These requirements are appropriate for exploring for magma chambers in subduction zones—the motivation for developing this system. A playback facility uses the DEC LSI-11 computer, which has an assembly language set very similar to that of the MC6800.This equipment, or a slight modification thereof, would be suitable for recording strong-motion earthquakes, for monitoring quarry blasts, or for any seismological effort in which the triggering criterion can be specified as an algorithm for programming into the microprocessor firmware. The resulting data are digital and only include significant signals, thus the data reduction facilities may properly concentrate on analysis and interpretation. Because the parameters of the system can be easily modified in firmware or software, the system is very flexible and can be considered the Universal Geophysical Recorder. An adaptation to recording transient EM phenomena is in progress. In this application, the source is controlled, but the use of the self-triggering approach eliminates the need for a radio-control system to activate the recorders, HIG Contribution no. 753.

    Notes: Summary A series of paired explosions in a salt mine near Winnfield, Louisiana, has been conducted to test a theory by Dr.A. L. Latter concerning seismic decoupling by underground cavities. The theory predicted a decoupling of about 100. Free-field and surface measurements from an explosion in either a 6-ft-or a 15-ft-radius spherical cavity were compared with similar measurements from a completely tamped explosion. Shot sizes were from 20 Ib up to a few tons. Surface measurements were made out to 100 km and covered the frequency range from 0.5 to 100 cps. The experiment confirmed that decoupling does occur. The actual decoupling factor as a function of frequency is presented and compared with theLatter theory.

    Notes: Abstract An interesting aspect of solar rotation is the fact that coronal holes seem to exhibit little or no differential rotation. We set out to investigate the question of whether or not the photospheric magnetic fields underlying coronal holes also exhibit reduced differential rotation. In order to accomplish this we measured the daily positions of filaments and plages surrounding a large coronal hole that lasted for several disk passages. The resulting differential rotation curve was considerably flatter than the standard curve for long-lived filaments and was in remarkably good agreement with the curve found for the overlying coronal hole itself.

    Notes: Abstract Two siblings with histologically and radiologically proven tumoral calcinosis presented with cerebral and peripheral aneurysms. The brother died of a ruptured subclavian artery aneurysm after surgical repair of brachial, iliofemoral and coeliac axis aneurysms. Magnetic resonance and catheter angiography in the sister demonstrated marked carotid dysplasia and a left ophthalmic segment aneurysm, not amenable to treatment. We believe this is the first reported case of familial aneurysms in association with tumoral calcinosis.

The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of single-slice phase-contrast angiography (SSPCA) as a rapid technique for the investigation of suspected dural venous sinus occlusion. Images were obtained on 25 normal volunteers to document the accuracy of SSPCA in the demonstration of slow flow states. Normal volunteers were imaged using sagittal and coronal SSPCA (slice thickness 13 cm, matrix 256 × 256, TR 14 ms, TE 7 ms, flip angle 20 °, peak velocity encoding rate 30 cm/s). Sinus patency and flow rate were confirmed by measurement of flow in the superior sagittal and transverse sinuses using quantified single-slice phase difference images. Imaging was performed in 50 patients undergoing routine brain scans in order to determine the optimal slice orientation for clinical use. Twenty-one patients with suspected dural venous sinus thrombosis were also investigated with SSPCA and the diagnosis confirmed by one or more alternative imaging techniques. Imaging time was 29 s per acquisition and image quality was good in all cases. Variations in dural sinus patency and flow in normal volunteers were accurately predicted by SSPCA (kappa = 0.92). Use of a single angulated slice (130 mm thick, para-sagittal image angled 30 ° towards coronal and 30 ° towards transverse) provided sufficient separation of right- and left-sided venous structures to allow use of a single projection. The presence and extent of sinus occlusions in 14 patients and the absence of thrombosis in 7 were accurately identified by SSPCA. Sensitivity and specificity in this limited study were both 100 %. The SSPCA technique takes less than 30 s and provides a reliable and rapid technique for the diagnosis of dural venous sinus thrombosis.
