Abstract The virulence of threeAeromonas hydrophila strains isolated from humans and water were compared by intramuscular inoculation of normal and x-irradiated mice and goldfish. Selected strains, irrespective of source, were pathogenic for mice and goldfish with maximum mortality of normal hosts observed at 24–48 h after injection. Immunosuppression resulted in increased mortality of hosts by two of the threeA. hydrophila strains. The variation in virulence potential of differentA. hydrophila isolates may depend upon the in vivo interaction of endotoxins, surface antigens, and extracellular bacterial products.
