Geophysical Research Letters, 45(16), 8455-8461, https://doi.org/10.1029/2018GL079706

Description: A climatically induced acceleration in ocean‐driven melting of Antarctic ice shelves would have consequences for both the discharge of continental ice into the ocean and thus global sea level, and for the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water and the oceanic meridional overturning circulation. Using a novel gas‐tight in situ water sampler, noble gas samples have been collected from six locations beneath the Filchner Ice Shelf, the first such samples from beneath an Antarctic ice shelf. Helium and neon are uniquely suited as tracers of glacial meltwater in the ocean. Basal meltwater fractions range from 3.6% near the ice shelf base to 0.5% near the sea floor, with distinct regional differences. We estimate an average basal melt rate for the Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf of 177 ± 95 Gt/year, independently confirming previous results. We calculate that up to 2.7% of the meltwater has been refrozen, and we identify a local source of crustal helium.

    Publication Date: 2024-07-19
Description: Turbulence profile measurements made on the upper continental slope and shelf of the southeastern Weddell Sea reveal striking contrasts in dissipation and mixing rates between the two sites. The mean profiles of dissipation rates from the upper slope are 1-2 orders of magnitude greater than the profiles collected over the shelf in the entire water column. The difference increases toward the bottom where the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy and the vertical eddy diffusivity on the slope exceed 10-7 W kg-1 and 10-2 m2 s-1, respectively. Elevated levels of turbulence on the slope are concentrated within a 100 m thick bottom layer, which is absent on the shelf. The upper slope is characterized by near-critical slopes and is in close proximity to the critical latitude for semidiurnal internal tides. Our observations suggest that the upper continental slope of the southern Weddell Sea is a generation site of semidiurnal internal tide, which is trapped along the slope along the critical latitude, and dissipates its energy in a inline image m thick layer near the bottom and within inline image km across the slope.

Description: In 1995, two current meter moorings where deployed in the Weddell Sea at the northern exit of the Filchner Trough, during a cruise with the vessel Polarstern. At the two sites, Fr1 and Fr2, temperature and currents were measured at various depths. The moorings were recovered in 1998. For more details see reference Woodgate et al. (1998).

Geophysical Research Letters, 40(23), 6176-6180, https://doi.org/10.1002/2013GL058304

Description: Over the last decade, several hundred seals have been equipped with conductivity-temperature-depth sensors in the Southern Ocean for both biological and physical oceanographic studies. A calibrated collection of seal-derived hydrographic data is now available, consisting of more than 165,000 profiles. The value of these hydrographic data within the existing Southern Ocean observing system is demonstrated herein by conducting two state estimation experiments, differing only in the use or not of seal data to constrain the system. Including seal-derived data substantially modifies the estimated surface mixedlayer properties and circulation patterns within and south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Agreement with independent satellite observations of sea ice concentration is improved, especially along the East Antarctic shelf. Instrumented animals efficiently reduce a critical observational gap, and their contribution to monitoring polar climate variability will continue to grow as data accuracy and spatial coverage increase.

Description: Time series of multi-annual (2015-2019) in-situ measurements of ocean hydrography (temperature, salinity) and ocean current velocities from five hot-water borehole deployed moorings inside the Filchner Ronne Ice Shelf cavity (Southern Weddell Sea, Antartcica), and adjacent ice shelf basal melting radar data (ApRES). Instrument raw data that has been collected as part of the joint FISP (AWI) and FISS (BAS) project has been processed, low pass filtered and interpolated onto a common time axis for synoptic analysis presented in Observed interannual changes beneath Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf linked to large scale atmospheric circulation by T. Hattermann et al. (accepted).

Description: Sub-ice shelf ocean hydrography (temperature, salinity) data were recovered from moorings FSW1 and FSE2 on Filchner Ice Shelf during the FISP-Air airplane campaign in December 2022 - January 2023. Due to different technical failures, both moorings did not transmit their oceanographic data via iridium for several months/years. The sites were visited by plane and missing data were downloaded from a total of 11 SBE37IMP MicroCATs via the inductive modem tether. The downloaded data include the periods 01/2022 – 01/2023 (FSW1), 07/2019 – 10/2019 (FSE2), and 08/2020 – 01/2023 (also FSE2). The moorings were also successfully repaired in the field, and have since resumed sending their data via iridium again. The attached .zip file contains the original logfiles as recorded in the field (.cap files), selected auxiliary information, as well as a cleaned version of these data files. This sub-dataset will be merged with the existing time series since 2016 to yield a fully processed and quality-controlled dataset, which will be published separately. It was also planned to visit moorings FNE1 and FNE2, but these sites could not be reached due to challenging weather conditions. More campaign details are available in the attached field report. This data is part of the joint FISP (AWI) and FISS (BAS) projects.
