    Notes: Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) in agricultural soils influence soil quality and greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Land use, management practices, soil characteristics, and climate influence such changes. Using the Century model we estimated the rate of SOC change in agricultural soils of Canada for the period 1970 to 2010. This estimation was based on the estimated SOC change for 15% of the 1250 agriculturally designated soil landscape of Canada (SLC) polygons. Simulations were carried out for two to five crop rotations and for conventional and no-tillage. The results indicate that the agricultural soils in Canada, whose SOC are currently very close to equilibrium, will stop being a net source of CO2 and will become a sink by the year 2000. Rates of carbon change for the years 1970, 1990, and 2010 were estimated to be −67, − 39, and 11 kgC ha−1. The rate of decline in the carbon content of agricultural soils in Canada has slowed considerably in the 1990s as a result of an increase in the adoption of no-tillage management, a reduction in the use of summer fallowing, and an increase in fertilizer application. We estimate that the proportion of agricultural land storing SOC will have increased from 17% in 1990 to 53% by the year 2000.

    Notes: Myliobatidae is a family of large pelagic rays including cownose, eagle and manta rays.They are extremely efficient swimmers, can cruise at high speeds and can perform turn-on-a-dimemaneuvering, making these fishes excellent inspiration for an autonomous underwater vehicle.Myliobatoids have been studied extensively from a biological perspective; however the fluidmechanisms that produce thrust for their large-amplitude oscillatory-style pectoral fin flapping areunknown. An experimental robotic flapping wing has been developed that closely matches thecamber and planform shapes of myliobatoids. The wing can produce significant spanwisecurvature, phase delays down the span, and oscillating frequencies of up to 1 Hz, capturing thedominant kinematic modes of flapping for myliobatoids. This paper uses dye flow visualization toqualitatively characterize the fluid mechanisms at work during steady-state oscillation. It is shownthat oscillatory swimming uses fundamentally different fluid mechanisms than undulatoryswimming by the generation of leading-edge vortices. Lessons are distilled from studying the fluiddynamics of myliobatoids that can be applied to the design of biomimetic underwater vehicles usingmorphing wing technology

    Notes: Abstract: Discussion-based exercises are a prevalent form of training in emergency management, aimed at improving coordinative decision making between the various agencies involved in disaster response. In each exercise, small multi-agency groups of decision makers discuss potential courses of action within a fictitious disaster scenario presented as a textual narrative supported by visual materials. We present a cognitive engineering analysis of the problem of designing disaster scenarios for effective discussion-based exercises. The analysis was carried out through the development of a pilot authoring environment to establish and address the requirements of a training organisation in the UK. The pilot authoring environment embodies a simple theoretical model of the exercise process in which facts of a disaster scenario afford discussion of pertinent issues which are elicited by considerations fed to trainees. This representational scheme allows the authoring environment to complement and extend authors’ mental models of exercises, and thereby enhance five aspects of authoring: rationalisation; continuity of rationale; evolution; adaptability; and the integration of evaluation feedback.

    Notes: Abstract A simple mathematical model describing coupled electrical, optical and thermal effects in semiconductor lasers is introduced. The bifurcation structure of the underlying (perfect) isothermal equations is examined to acquire insight into the nature of the steady states. An infinite set of steady states is obtained at one of these bifurcation points. In the (imperfect) isothermal and thermal problems, an asymptotic analysis provides expressions for the parameter regions which characterise the stable steady states of single-mode operation. The reason that semiconductor lasers usually operate with a single dominant mode is that this corresponds to the only stable steady state. Parameter regions in which two modes share dominance are also identified.
