Abstract The relationship between total phytoplankton cell number, chlorophyll a, cell volume, and the response of these parameters to reactive phosphorus and nitrate in surface waters of Saronicos Gulf (Greece) was examined using simple and partial correlation statistics. Different conclusions could be drawn as to the comparability between biomass parameters and their interrelation with nutrients. Partial correlation analysis is considered to be a better method for comparing ecological data. The analysis of phytoplankton abundance should include determinations of as many biomass characteristics as possible since each has its own specificity.
