Description: KnowRISK (Know your city, Reduce seISmic risK through non-structural elements) is a project co-financed by the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection under the Prevention and Preparedness call 2015, that focused on communicating preventative solutions to mitigate damage caused on Non-Structural Elements (NSE, the non loading part of buildings) during earthquakes. Although responsible for a large part of the damage occurring during moderate magnitude earthquakes, which are very frequent, prevention on such elements is often underestimated. This leaflet is Practical Guide intended to support communities. Four steps are coded in the Guides to assist people into a process of increasing safety, efforts and eventually cost: Move, referring to actions that just require rearranging furniture; Protect, referring to valuable fragile or expensive object; Secure, referring to large and heavy items that pose serious danger when loose; Retrofit, referring to those actions that are more intrusive and need an expert intervention. The Guide provides indication to implement, where possible, DoItYourself actions.

Description: This special issue of “Annals of Geophysics” concerns the dissemination of knowledge on the prevention of damage mainly due to non-structural elements during earthquakes and its practical application at houses, schools and offices by common citizens, companies and institutions. The seismic capacity of buildings and other civil engineering structures and infrastructures are object of regulations for design and construction, and in some cases also the design, fabrication and mounting of electrical and mechanical equipments. Consequently, even in strong earthquakes many collapses of buildings and infrastructures are avoided. However, with few exceptions, design procedures do not aim at avoiding seismic vibrations from being transferred to the structures, but enable the structures to resist to the effects of those vibrations

Description: Encouraging property owners and individuals to adopt mitigation measures to improve the resilience of their buildings and equipments to seismic hazard has been a major challenge in many earthquake- prone countries. Few business leaders are aware of the fragility of their supply chains or other critical systems due to earthquake hazard. Bridging the gap between research production and research use is another crucial challenge for the earthquake risk research process. The KnowRISK project outcome is aimed at encouraging the proactive engagement of multi- stakeholders (community at large, schools, business community and local govern-ment groups) undertaking non-structural mitigation measures that will minimize earthquake losses to individuals and communities. Engaging stakeholders, taking into account their needs and inputs to maintain critical and urgent business activities, can contribute to the research findings and ensure that our data collection is thorough and complete. Engagement with stakeholders, during the whole process can lead to improved outcomes and for the development of viable solutions, for business and society, because of stakeholder’s role and influence within the organizations.

Description: Understanding seismic damages to non-structural elements and their effects on functionality of facilities are important in developing general recommendations for earthquake risk management. This paper presents a review of non-structural damage caused by recent earthquakes in Mt. Etna in Italy, Lisbon and Azores islands in Portugal and southern Lowland in Iceland. The study was performed as a part of the KnowRISK EU project. The objective of this review is to identify the most commonly damaged non-structural elements in these different areas. This is a basic requirement for preparing prevention strategies communication campaigns that are tailored to the local needs. This study shows that the most commonly damaged elements are partition walls, ceiling systems, non-structural vaults, chimneys, building contents and storage racks. Analyses proved that substantive efforts are needed worldwide to improve techniques for reducing damage to non-structural elements. The observations on frequency, severity, and consequences of damage of different non-structural elements are important for (i) making mitigation plans and priorities (ii) designing mitigation measures, and (iii) communicating the mitigation measures to different stakeholders. These activities aim to raise stakeholders’ awareness of potential risk and viable mitigation measures.
Description: KnowRISK is co-financed by European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Grant agreement ECHO/SUB/2015/718655/PREV28. It is a project that involved four different European research centers and universities under the coordination of the Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal). The partners are the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (Italy), the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (Portugal) and the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (University of Iceland). We acknowledge Antonio Torrisi, Department of Civil Protection of Sicily (DPCR) – Unit of Seismic and Volcanic Risk S.03, for having provided data from AeDES forms. Rajesh Rupakhety acknowledges support from the University of Iceland research fund.

Description: Good performance of non-structural elements can be decisive in saving lives and costs when an earthquake strikes. The European project KnowRISK aims to educate and encourage households to take the necessary precautionary measures to protect people, houses, and contents. Preparedness and prevention act on community resilience. Within the KnowRISK project, the idea of a Practical Guide has been conceived suggesting seismic mitigation solutions for non-structural components to non-experts stakeholders. It is intended to guide people into the first steps of prevention in a straightforward manner, minimizing or avoiding injuries, damage, and long-term financial consequences. The novelty of the Guide belongs to his philosophy: a path through increasing challenges corresponds to a growing level of safety. The idea is that anyone can mitigate seismic risk in its own environment by adopting simple and low cost measures. The Practical Guide may contribute to increase risk awareness. This kind of initiatives if undertaken at larger scales may also enhance social resilience.
