Description: The spring session of ACFM gave advice for a numberof stocks in the North Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic. The present assessment of the situation is given here forstocks of higher importance for the German fishery. These are: Blue Whiting: the stock is still relatively high, this, however, will not last very long, due to too intensefishing. Cod in Kattegat: stock is outside safe biologicallimits. No immediate recovery in sight. Cod in 22–24(Baltic): stock is inside save biological limits. F, however, is above the recommendation of the IBSFC. GreenlandHalibut: state of the stock not quite clear. The presentfishing intensity seems to be sustainable. Herring (Atlanto-scandian, Norwegian spring spawner): stock is within safe biological limits, weak recruitment of the recent years will lead to a reduction of biomass. Herring: for Baltic spring spawner in 22–24 and IIIa still no increasing tendency detectable. North Sea Herring: furtherincreasing tendency, with 900 000 t over B lim, goodrecruitment. Herring in VIa: stable. Redfish: generallydecreasing tendency observed, a reduction of the fisheryis recommended. Signs of recovery, however, visible for some units

Description: Information is given about the results of the latest meeting of the Herring Assessment Working Group for the Area South of 62° N and the Baltic Fisheries Assessment Working Group, which were conducted in March and April at ICES headquarters in Copenhagen. The actual stock development and the catch options estimated for different assessment units of herring and sprat are presented. The spawning stock size of North Sea herring reached in 1998 for the first time since 1991 a level above the Minimum Biological Acceptable Level (MBAL) of 800 000 t. Keeping the fishery at the present level the spawning stock size should reach in 1999 a level of about 1.2 mio. t. For the Western Baltic Spring spawning herring stock no actual stock estimate was presented. Due to uncertainties in splitting the catches in North Sea autumn and Baltic spring spawners no analytical assessment was accepted.

Description: Information is given about the last meeting of the ICES “Herring Assessment Working Group for the Area South of 62° N”, conducted from 9.-18. March 1998 in Copenhagen. The actual stock development and the catch option estimations for different assessment units of herring and sprat are presented. The spawning stock size of North Sea herring was in 1997 still below the “Minimum Biological Acceptable Level” (MBAL) of 800 000 t. Keeping the fishing mortalities at the present level, the spawning stock size should reach a level of about 1.1 million tons by end of 1998. For the Western Baltic pring spawning herring stock no actual stock parameters were estimated. Due to uncertainties in splitting the catches in North sea autumn and Baltic spring spawners no analytical assessment was accepted.

Description: Germany is planning to construct a new herring factory on the Island of Rügen. This factory will need about 50 000 t of herring per year. For the German fishery this would mean to increase the past 10w 1andings of less than 15 000 t per year to a level which had a1ready been reached by the GDR before the reunification. News of less herring in the Baltic and a decline of German landings in 1998 compared to the years before have led to discussions whether the planned increase in landings could be reached and kept in the future. Information is given in view of German fishery interests about:• the actual assessed herring stock units and the corresponding recent stock development in the Baltic Sea• the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) values for the western and central Baltic Sea in 1998 and in 1999• the German landings during spring of the years 1993 to 1998 in the Greifswalder Bodden, main German fishery ground in the Baltic Sea

Description: Information is given on the landings of herring and sprat in the Skagerrak/Kattegat and Baltic Sea. Based onassessment units used by the ‘Herring Assessment Working Group for the Area South of 62° N’ and the ‘Baltic FisheriesAssessment’ working group, the total landings are shown for the years 1974 to 1996. Further the quarterly landingsfor 1996 are listed on national basis by area/Sub-Division. In addition an actual description of the national fleetsoperating in the Skagerrak/Kattegat and Baltic Sea is given. At least the actual stock development and the catch options estimated by the corresponding working groups for different assessment units is presented.
