Notes: Abstract Urinary exfoliated cells were observed by scanning electron microscopy in 20 urine specimens from 12 patients (group 1) with advanced prostatic cancer treated by endocrine therapy (castration and estrogen treatment). Urinary exfoliated cells, from 9 patients (group 2) with incidental prostatic cancer treated by castration only and from 10 patients (group 3) with benign prostatic hypertrophy, were used as controls. In the first group, large epithelial cells with complicated microridges, which seemed to be squamous cells by light microscopy, were frequently observed, and the percentages of superficial, intermediate and atypical squamous cells having topographic features were significantly larger in the urine specimens from group 1 than those in the other groups. Active cell turnover of the squamous metaplastic mucosa in the trigone or urethra may be induced by estrogen administration.
