Notes: Xanthan overproduction only takes place if a sugar which may serve as precursor is present and transition to limited growth occured. This transient phase is characterized by a change in composition of macromolecular cell components (RNA, protein, carbohydrates). During the transient phase nearly no nitrogen is consumed, whereas glucose and oxygen consumption proceeds nearly undisturbed. The changes observed in the transient phase are discussed in context with physiological adaption.

Notes: Anaerobic degradation of a model waste water was investigated in two different types of fermenters (filter and hybride filter) under batch and continuous conditions. Gas production, COD removal, formation of fatty acids and the CoF420-content of the biomass were monitored. At both modes of action the filter showed more process stability.

Notes: A method for the photometric measurement of dehydrogenase activities with the redox dye phenazine methosulphate at a fixed biomass concentration was applied for the investigation of idiophasic product synthesis. It was found that in citric acid fermentation by Yarrowia lipolytica which is characterized by a well defined separation into tropho-and idiophase the magnitude of product synthesis rates corresponds to the level of dehydrogenase activity at the end of the trophophase. In cellulase production by Trichoderma reesei the tropho-and idiophase are not well defined but a rise of dehydrogenase activity in the course of the idiophase is likely to correspond to an increase of the cellulase formating rate. The significance of the relation of dehydrogenase activity to production rates for monitoring industrial fermentations is discussed.

Notes: In this report the biokinetic parameter μmax, m and Ymax for the denitrification of a medium containing acetat as C-source and a soft coal gasification water containing volatile fatty acids as main components have been compared. An expression for a true maximum specific growth rate is proposed (μmaxw = μmax + mYmax) and it could be shown that despite different values for μmax the values for μmaxw correspond fairly well.

Notes: When glucose is used as C-source extracelluar citric-acid accumulation does not start at the point of N-source exhaustion. A transition phase lasting for about 2-3 hours is observed. It may be assumed that the continuation of growth after the N-source exhaustion coincides with the delay of the citric-acid accumulation. During the course of citric-acid production characteristic interruptions of the glucose uptake and the citric-acid accumulation are found. The findings are discussed in more detail.

Notes: After exhaustion of the N-sources the yeast S.l. excretes citric and isocitric acid with high rates without interferring in the postlogarithmic phase the intracellular production of reserve materials like polysaccharides and especially lipids. The synthesis of citric acids and of reserve materials are therefore autonomically proceeding processes inside of the cellsWith increasing lipid content the ergosterol content increasesThe utilization of the ergosterol rich yeasts as valuable byproduct of the citric acid production is discussed.

Notes: This paper examines the microbial denitrification of a medium containing acetate as C-source and of an industrial effluent containing volatile fatty acids as main components a ndphenolics as minor components.Values for m and Ymax are represented. It has been concluded that the maintenance coefficient comprises also those processes not involved in the maintenance metabolism of the cells. The least fraction of the rate of substrate utilization of this extended maintenance metabolism has been expressed by m · 100/qmax. From the values of Ymax a P/2e-ratio 〈 1 and the equation of cell synthesis have been evaluated.
