    Interleukin-1-like activities in synovial fluids of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic synovitis (1985)

    Notes: Summary Interleukin-1 (Il-1)-like activity in biological fluids was measured by their ability to rectify the Il-1-dependent lymphokine production of highly purified T lymphocytes to a recall antigen. Il-1-like activity was found in 9 of 11 synovial fluid (SF) specimens from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but only in 2 of 11 paired RA sera. In traumatic synovitis, low Il-1-like activity was recorded in 5 of 9 SF specimens, and a similar low activity was found in sera of 4 of these patients. The Il-1-like activity was partly absorbed by an anti-Il-1 antibody. The presence of Il-1 in the SF of patients with RA suggests in vivo activation of monocytes/macrophages.

    Notes: Summary Lymphocytes from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were assayed for their ability to secrete Ig and rheumatoid factors (RF) upon polyclonal activation in vitro. B lymphocytes secreting IgM-RF and IgG-RF were enumerated using hemolytic plaque forming cell (PFC) assays. The sensitivity of RF-PFC formation was similar to that of a reverse PFC assay detecting all cells secreting Ig. Blood mononuclear cells from RA patients generated a median of 12 IgM-RF and 15 IgG-RF-secreting cells/106 after 6 days culture with pokeweed mitogen (PWM). Thus a median of approximately 0.5% of IgM- and IgG-secreting cells were identified as RF-PFC. Synovial fluid B lymphocytes co-cultured with autologous blood T lymphocytes in the presence of PWM generated higher numbers of RF-secreting cells; medians of 43 IgM-RF and 441 IgG-RF secreting cells/106 were found. Thus, 8–9% of IgM- and IgG-secreting cells from synovial fluid were identified as RF-PFC. In co-cultures containing synovial fluid T cells, PWM-induced RF secretion was low. The data indicate that both blood and SF B cells have the potential for RF secretion.

    Notes: Abstract Bidirectional selection was conducted for dustbathing activity in male Japanese quail over 17 generations. The response to selection was slightly asymmetrical, due mainly to scale effects and a threshold imposing discontinuity on the visible expression of dustbathing in the low line. Correlated responses to selection were found for latency to dustbathe, duration, intensity, and incidence of nonbathers. In general, changes followed linear patterns over time in both lines with the exception of quadratic change in nonbathers in the high line. Under artificial environment, only minor natural selection pressure is assumed to act on the expression of dustbathing behavior.

    Notes: Summary The influence of growth on the extent of heterosis for juvenile body weight and gonad development was studied in a diallel cross among two lines of Japanese quail differing in adult body size. A total of 1,096 birds (563 males and 533 females) was slaughtered between 25 and 49 days of age. Reciprocal cross differences were non-significant. Heterosis showed a curvilinear course with age peaking during early growth (body weight) and during sexual maturity (gonad percentage). Overall advanced physiological development of the crossbreds probably begins as early as during the embryonic stages and results in earlier sexual maturity. In females, heterosis for percentage gonads was biased strongly by the presence of a hard-shelled egg in the uterus.
