Notes: The vinyl monomers methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and β-methylstyrene were dissolved in CF3CCl3, x-irradiated at 4 or 77 K, and investigated by ESR spectroscopy. The molecular cation of methyl acrylate has no resolved hyperfine structure, indicating that the unpaired electron is localized on the carbonyl oxygen. Evidence that a two-stage photoinduced reaction gives rise to a propagating radical was obtained. Propagating radicals were observed also with methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, and methacrylic acid as solutes. The positive ion of β-methylstyrene has been prepared and characterized. The experimental data have been compared with molecular orbital calculations at different levels of approximation.

Notes: The crystallization process of the thermoplastic polyimide derived from 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 2,2-dimethyl-1,3,-(4-aminophenoxy) propane (DMDA) is studied at the molecular level by utilizing infrared spectroscopy's sensitivity to local molecular environment. Assignments of the unique spectral features appearing upon crystallization are made with additional verification from crystalline model imide compounds. A direct comparison of an annealed polyimide film studied by both infrared spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction shows fairly close agreement in the amount of crystallinity obtained. The unique crystalline infrared spectral features provide insight into the molecular mechanism involved with the crystallization process. Spectral shifts occurring upon crystallization reflect intramolecular rotations toward increased coplanarity as well as intermolecular chain packing of certain molecular groups at specific sites of the chain backbone. The site specific information is then used to study the relative kinetic behavior of the intramolecular and intermolecular effects occurring during crystallization. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of high molecular weight natural rubber (NR) from Manihot glaziovii and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4 phenylene oxide) were prepared and characterized. A number of pseudo IPNs and blends of these materials were also studied. A single phase morphology is found in full IPNs with either high or low weight percent of NR. The intermediate composition full IPNs, pseudo IPNs, and blends all exhibited microphase separation, as seen by both DSC and SEM studies with domains sizes in the range of 1000-4000 nm. In the discussion we briefly compare these IPNs with the other previously prepared IPNs of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide).

Notes: An angle-resolving electron spectrometer has been developed for use with an ultra high vacuum scanning electron microscope. A large cylindrical mirror analyser has been equipped with a parallel detection system for simultaneous recording of electron energy spectra and angle-resolved images. Two different models have been developed to simulate the spectrometer. Angle-resolved images and energy spectra of different electron emission functions can be simulated. The angle-resolved images from amorphous samples were used to check the two simulation models and the performance of the spectrometer. Some initial results of applying the spectrometer on Ag/Ge(111) and Ag/α-Ge are discussed.

Timusk We present data on the optical conductivity of URu 2 − x ( Fe , Os ) x Si 2 . While the parent material URu 2 Si 2 enters the enigmatic hidden order (HO) phase below 17.5 K, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase is induced by the substitution of Fe or Os onto the Ru sites. We find that both the HO and the AFM phases ex… [Phys. Rev. B 92, 195111] Published Fri Nov 06, 2015

Description: Extracellular protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is required for platelet thrombus formation and fibrin generation after arteriolar wall injury in live mice. PDI is secreted from platelets and endothelial cells on cellular activation, but the mechanism of capture of secreted PDI within the injured vasculature is unknown. We establish that, like the endothelial β3 integrin α V β 3 , the platelet integrin α IIb β 3 binds PDI. PDI also binds to recombinant β3. Using intravital microscopy, we demonstrate that PDI accumulation at the site of laser-induced arteriolar wall injury is markedly reduced in β3-null (β3 –/– ) mice, and neither a platelet thrombus nor fibrin is generated at the vessel injury site. The absence of fibrin after vascular injury in β3 –/– mice is because of the absence of extracellular PDI. To evaluate the relative importance of endothelial α V β 3 versus platelet α IIb β 3 or α V β 3 , we performed reciprocal bone marrow transplants on wild-type and β3 –/– mice. PDI accumulation and platelet thrombus formation were markedly decreased after vessel injury in wild-type mice transplanted with β3 –/– bone marrow or in β3 –/– mice transplanted with wild-type bone marrow. These results indicate that both endothelial and platelet β3 integrins contribute to extracellular PDI binding at the vascular injury site.
