Abstract A quantum covariance function is introduced whose real and imaginary parts are related to the independent contributions to the uncertainty principle: noncommutativity of the operators and nonseparability. It is shown that factorizability of states is a sufficient but not necessary condition for separability. It is suggested that all quantum effects could be considered to be a consequence of nonseparability alone.
