Notes: Abstract Measurements were made of the long bones of the upper limbs (humerus, ulna, radius) of 58 aborted embryos and fetuses, developmental age from 8 to 14 weeks, crown-rump length (CRL) between 38 and 116 mm. The specimens were cleared and double-stained, using alcian blue and alizarin red S for a differential detection of cartilage and bone. The values of both the total length (TL) and the ossified part (OL) of each long bone were related to the fetal developmental age previously estimated by freshly measured CRL. The relationship to another developmental pattern, i.e. the number of ossified centres in the vertebral column, suggested that the OL values could be much more significant than TL for the assessment of fetal growth.

Notes: Summary The ossification pathways of both vertebral centra (i.e., vertebral bodies) and neural arches were studied in human embryos and fetuses (CR-length between 38 and 116 mm). A clearing and double-staining method for whole embryo or fetus, using alcian blue and alizarin red S, allowed an easy and precise detection of the morphology of the whole vertebral column and every single vertebra. Both cartilaginous and bony components were clearly visible. Different temporal and topographical patterns of ossification were shown for the centra and arches; the latter were respectively proximaldistal (i.e., bidirectional from a defined starting tract in T10-L1) and cranial-caudal (i.e., monodirectional). The patterns could be related to the morphogenetic processes of other structures (i.e., muscles and nerves). Moreover, the numerical survey of ossification centers provided a possible parameter for the determination of the fetal developmental age. This could be useful in the study of pathological conditions.

Notes: Summary We determined the water-soluble thiol (SH) content and the osmolality of the cell sap in spruce trees of both low- and high-altitude origin that were transplanted to two test areas at different altitudes (400 m and 1700 m). There was little or no significant difference in SH content and osmotic value between trees of low- or high-altitude origin at the same altitude, but the sulfhydryl (SH) content varied with the altitude of cultivation, being higher at 1700 m than at 400 m. SH content and osmotic value were higher in winter, independent of altitude and provenance. The annual pattern of water-soluble and protein-bound SH content and glutathione reductase activity was measured in spruce trees at 1700 m; these values also peaked in winter and were lowest in summer.

Notes: Abstract The classification of chromosomal aberrations was used to characterize different factors affecting chromosomes in the root meristem of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] trees. It is important to know the most significant factor affecting the chromosomes in the root meristem of plants at natural sites. The results suggest that an intensive site effect is more significant than the soil or the provenance of the individual. This cytogenetic plant test system was also used to investigate 5-year-old spruce trees exposed in environmental chambers to elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide (750 cm3m−3) and ozone (0.08 cm3m−3) as single variables or in combination, and then transferred to a field for observation of a “memory effect”. The fumigated variants showed an increased number of chromosomal aberrations compared to the controls, which carried on as a memory effect in the root meristems far beyond the fumigation period.

Notes: Summary Young spruce seedlings (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) grown in hydroponic culture were exposed to three different concentrations (50,100, and 500 μM) of reduced glutathione for 24 h. These physiologically relevant concentrations of glutathione had a multiple effect on the investigated tissue. Feeding of glutathione to roots increased the concentrations of thiols (glutathione, cysteine, and γ-glutamyl-cysteine) in roots, decreased the rate of cell divisions, induced mitotic abnormalities, and affected the cell ultrastructure. Electron micrographs showed effects such as advanced vacuolation, dilated rough-endoplasmic-reticulum cisternae, and separations of the plasma membrane from the cell wall.

Notes: Summary In over 4000 interventions on the biliary tract a sunken drain was inserted in 35 patients: 3 times because of carcinomatous infiltration from outside, 27 times because of a proximal hepatic carcinoma and 5 times because ofEchinococcus multilocularis. The postoperative mortality was 8.5 %. Follow-up examinations show that a little more than a quarter of carcinoma patients died of the primary disease within 6 months but also that 5 patients survived their serious cancer disease for up to 21/4 years after the removal of the drainage obstruction. The sunken drain gives better results in Echinococcus alveolaris. Trouble-free intervals of many years were observed.

Notes: Summary Obstructive jaundice is a sign of serious disease; it is based on multifactorial events. Early diagnosis, which is of vital importance to successful treatment, is often impossible since in most of the cases there are only nonspecific prodromal symptoms. The only treatment promising success is the curative operation. In benign obstruction this means early sanitation, and in malignant obstruction eradication of the tumor.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der maligne Verschluß-Ikterus ist ausnahmslos eine lebensbedrohliche Erkrankung.
Notes: Summary Malignant obstructive jaundice is invariably a disease endangering life. Since there are no prodromal symptoms, nearly one-fourth of the patients are primarily inoperable when seen, and in one-fifth is the tumor resectable. Even in operable cases success is moderate; the highest and longest rates of survival can be achieved with papillary carcinoma. A substantial chance lies in the decisive improvement and shortening of preoperative diagnostics.
