Notes: The behaviour of 5 polymeric viologens 2a - e as electron donors in the production of hydrogen by intact cells of Cl. pasteurianum, D. desulfuricans, and R. rubrum was studied. The hydrogen production was followed by gas chromatography and the results indicate that Cl. pasteurianum and D. desulfuricans are much more active than R. rubrum. Polymeric viologens 2a - e show lower initial rates than the low molecular weight viologens 1a and 1b. However, this is independent of the final amount of hydrogen produced, since the polymers are as efficient or more efficient than 1a and 1b. The results are briefly discussed in terms of redox potentials, substituent effects and conformational factors.

Notes: Leader peptidase, a novel serine protease in Escherichia coli, catalyzes the cleavage of the amino-terminal leader sequences from exported proteins. It is an integral membrane protein containing two transmembrane segments with its carboxy-terminal catalytic domain residing in the periplasmic space. Here, we report a procedure for the purification and the crystallization of a soluble non-membrane-bound form of leader peptidase (Δ2-75). Crystals were obtained by the sitting-drop vapor diffusion technique using ammonium dihydrogen phosphate as the precipitant. Interestingly, we have found that the presence of the detergent Triton X-100 is required to obtain crystals sufficiently large for X-ray analysis. The crystals belong to the tetragonal space group P42212, with unit cell dimensions of a = b = 115 Å and c = 100 Å, and contain 2 molecules per asymmetric unit. This is the first report of the crystallization of a leader (or signal) peptidase. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The complete mixing activated sludge (CMAS) system is gaining in popularity for treating both domestic and industrial wastewaters. Experience over the past 20 years has produced a simple mathematical model which can be used in both the design and the operational evaluation of CMAS systems. Laboratory pilot plants and full scale field units have furnished the basic data needed to confirm the validity of the mathematical model. The basic concepts of the model are discussed in light of field evaluations. Areas of conflict and confusion which have arisen in the past will be presented and discussed. Design examples and operational evaluations are presented for several different wastewater systems.

Notes: An extended transportation array representation is developed for the design of process heat recovery networks incorporating heat engines and heat pumps. The formulation automatically accounts for the relocation of pinches in the integrated system. The optimal heat flow pattern is determined based on simple economic criteria. Simplified models of heat engine and heat pump systems are developed that permit integration options to be identified on the basis of heat flows without requiring specific cycle designs. The solution array identifies design alternatives and provides a decision framework to guide in selecting the final design topology.
