Notes: The optically pure steroid (+)-15 has been synthesized from the easily accessible (+)-carboxylic acid 11 by a sequence of 7 steps in 50% overall yield. The key steps are the regioselective deprotonation/alkylation 7+13 → 14 and the thermal SO2-extrusion/cycloaddition 14 → 15 (Scheme 3). The compound (+)-15 has been readily converted to the naturally occurring (+)-estradiol (17) in 60% yield.

Notes: 1,3-Dihydroisothianaphthen-2,2-dioxide (1) was readily converted to the 1-substituted sulfones 3 by deprotonation and subsequent electrophilic attack (Scheme 3 and Table). The appropriate 1-alkenyl- and 1-alkenoyl-sulfones 3 on heating at 213° to 240° underwent SO2-extrusion to give, via the non-isolated (E)-quinodimethanes II (Scheme 1), polycyclic products such as 4, 6 and 7 in good yields (Schemes 4 and 5). On the other hand, thermolysis of the 1-alkenoyl-1-thioether sulfones 9 furnished mainly the isochromenes 10 (Scheme 6).

Notes: Deposition processes and film properties of plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) films derived from fluoroalkylsilanes are described. The fluorinated silicon dioxide (FSG) films have lower dielectric constants (3.3-3.7) than non-fluorinated silicon dioxide films (〉4). With similar dielectric strengths, the reduced capacitance obtained with FSG films makes them useful as intermetal dielectrics (IMDs). The films are characterised using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, ellipsometry and capacitance-voltage measurements. Characterisation of the changes in FSG upon exposure to ambient conditions and a method for stabilising the films are presented

Notes: Aerobic irradiation of organic compounds in aqueous suspensions of titanium dioxide (TiO2) generally leads to rapid mineralization with little accumulation of intermediates. This environmentally advantageous feature, however, hinders attempts to obtain mechanistic information and, while expansion of the field continues unabated, details of reaction pathways in many cases remain obscure. We have developed a procedure that allows the identification and monitoring of principal primary products, and the outcome with p-cresol is reported. Extrapolation of primary product yield profiles to zero conversion enables us to account for approximately 50% of the initial mass loss of p-cresol. At least four pathways are in competition, including nuclear substitution by OH, side-chain oxidation, radical dimerization, and the hitherto undetected nuclear addition of OH. These findings allow the conflicting results reported by previous workers to be reconciled. Changing the solvent from water to 20% acetonitrile in water has little effect on the initial rate, but ring coupling is more favoured and there is some addition of O2. Preliminary measurements with 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (butylated hydroxytoluene, BHT), however, indicate that ortho-disubstitution with bulky tert-butyl groups substantially enhances the initial rate and changes the product profile significantly. The importance of both the extent of adsorption and substrate orientation on the catalyst surface is implicated in these results. © 1997 SCI.
