Notes: The loosely cross-linked poly(acryloyl-L-proline methyl ester) gel, which is known as one of the typical thermo-responsive gels, shows a volume transition around approximately 14°C in pure water. This volume transition is shifted to higher temperature by treatment in aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The analysis of the swelling-temperature curve (frequency distribution) was performed according to a moment analysis, in which the area under the swelling-temperature curve (AUC), mean swelling transition temperature (MSTT) and variance of swelling transition temperature (VSTT) were calculated. It is shown that the apparent volume transition temperature can be estimated from MSTT and that VSTT can be used to characterize the shape of the corresponding curves.

Notes: Photografting of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) on ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer films (thickness = 15,20, and 25 μm) and low-and high-density polyethylene films (thickness = 30 μm) was carried out at 60°C in a water medium. Xanthone was used as a photoinitiator by coating it on the film samples. The resultant NIPAAm-grafted films exhibited a temperature-responsive character, which was evaluated by measuring a dimensional change of the grafted films. The grafted films swelled and shrank in water at temperatures lower and higher than around 30°C, respectively. The character was found to be reversible between 0 and 50°C. It was observed that the extent of the character is largely influenced by film thickness, location of NIPAAm-grafted chains, and crystallinity of film substrate. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Gamma-ray-induced graft copolymerization of butadiene with vinyl monomers onto PVC was attempted to improve the physical properties of PVC. The Izod impact strength was increased from 2 kg·cm/cm2 to more than 100 kg·cm/cm2 by grafting ca. 10% butadiene. But the tensile strength and melt flow were decreased by the grafting. The electron micrograph showed that the mass of polybutadiene in the graft copolymer had a convenient diameter (0.1-1 μ) for absorbing the impact energy. The weatherability of PVC grafted with butadiene was improved by cografting of butadiene with acrylates and methacrylates which had long side chains.

Notes: Atactic polypropylene (APP) was dissolved in CCl4 and irradiated with 60Co gamma rays in various gas atmospheres (air, O2, N2, and Cl2). A small amount of the irradiated APP was blended with polyethylene (PE) as a sensitizer for photodegradation of PE. There was no significant acceleration of decrease in yield strength of PE with UV exposure when oxidized APP or chlorinated APP was used. On the contrary, the use of the APP which was both oxidized and chlorinated caused a considerable acceleration of decrease in both yield strength and elongation. From the fact that the amount of carbonyl groups formed in the matrix PE with UV light exposure was closely related to both the amount of carbonyl groups and the amount of C—Cl bonds existing in the APP before the UV exposure, it was concluded that the combined action of carbonyl groups and C—Cl bonds in the sensitizer is important in the promotion of the photodegradation of the matrix polymer.

Notes: Ion-exchange membranes were synthesized by radiation-induced grafting of methyl-α,β,β-trifluoroacrylate (MTFA) and also by cografting of MTFA with propylene. Although a larger grafting yield was obtained by cografting, the number of repeating units introduced in a unit volume of the graft films was unchanged. The electrical conductivity of the cografted polymer film was higher than that of the film grafted with MTFA alone when compared at the same number of repeating units. This result was well correlated with the difference in distribution of graft chains in polymer films observed by ESCA and EPMA. The more homogeneous the distribution was, the higher the electrical conductivity. It was suggested that an alternating copolymerization of MTFA with propylene was responsible for the homogeneous distribution of graft chains obtained by cografting.

Notes: Atactic polypropylene was irradiated in vacuo, in O2, and in Cl2 with 60Co γ-rays, and changes in polymer structure were investigated by means of IR and ESR measurements of the irradiated polymer and by mass spectrometry of gaseous products. The irradiation in vacuo mainly produced H2 with small amounts of lower hydrocarbons (C1 - C3). As a radical product, only an alkyl radical was observed. The increase in IR absorption at 886 cm-1 indicated the formation of vinylidene unsaturation. The irradiation in O2 produced oxygenated products such as CO, CO2, and H2O with a reduced amount of H2. In the irradiation in Cl2, HCI was a main gaseous product. The existence of C—Cl bonds and a small amount of polyenyl groups in the irradiated polymer indicated that the radiation-induced chlorination of APP was partly followed by elimination of HCl through a zip mechanism.

Notes: The porous copolymer films of N-methacryloyl-L-alanine methyl ester and diethyleneglycol-bis-allylcarbonate (diallyl oxydiethylene dicarbonate) were hydrolyzed with 1 M NaOH solution for 40 min at 25°C. The pores of the films showed pH response in diameter. The pore diameter of 3,7 μm in the buffer solution of pH 3 was closed completely at pH 5.
