    Notes: We present results of a theoretical and experimental study of Au—ZnSe—GaAs heterostructures. In the theoretical part we report the band diagrams, charge densities and static I-V curves obtained from a detailed numerical analysis. In the experimental part we give the results for the static I-V curves and frequency-dependent admittance and impedance at different bias voltages for an Au—ZnSe—GaAs heterostructure with a ZnSe layer of 2.75 μm thickness. An explicit analysis of the data shows that the system can be represented by an equivalent circuit of two RC elements in series corresponding to the ZnSe—GaAs and Au—Se heterojunctions.

    Notes: Irradiation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) with Mg(Kα) X-rays is shown to protect the surface against the chemical etching steps used to prepare PTFE for adhesion. Preirradiated etched samples of PTFE have adhesion strengths to epoxies of less than 3% of that for nonirradiated etched samples. The major portion of this decrease in adhesion strength occurs for X-ray exposures of less than 10 min and failure in every case occurs in PTFE and not in the bonded transition region. XPS measurements (20 Å sampling depth) show little difference in F content between irradiated and nonirradiated samples, but thermal desorption shows increasing short chain fluorocarbon desorption with irradiation time. These results are consistent with previous studies showing that irradiation produces free radicals that lead to branching and/or crosslinking, and a surface rich in low molecular weight fluorocarbons. The crosslinked surface is resistant to deep (10,000 Å) chemical attack and rich in short chain fluorocarbons; both effects are expected to lead to weak adhesive bonding.

    Notes: The occurrence of instabilities in chemically reacting systems, resulting in unsteady and spatially inhomogeneous reaction rates, is a widespread phenomenon. In this article, we use nonlinear signal processing techniques to extract a simple, but accurate, dynamic model from experimental data of a system with spatiotemporal variations. The approach consists of a combination of two steps. The proper orthogonal decomposition [POD or Karhunen-Loève (KL) expansion] allows us to determine active degrees of freedom (important spatial structures) of the system. Projection onto these “modes” reduces the data to a small number of time series. Processing these time series through an artificial neural network (ANN) results in a low-dimensional, nonlinear dynamic model with almost quantitative predictive capabilities.This approach is demonstrated using spatiotemporal data from CO oxidation on a Pt (110) crystal surface. In this special case, the dynamics of the two-dimensional reaction profile can be successfully described by four modes; the ANN-based model not only correctly predicts the spatiotemporal short-term behavior, but also accurately captures the long-term dynamics (the attractor). While this approach does not substitute for fundamental modeling, it provides a systematic framework for processing experimental data from a wide variety of spatiotemporally varying reaction engineering processes.

    Notes: This article describes a study of the polarographic reduction of the herbicide pyrazon, which yields two polarographic reduction waves: one in acidic media and the other in alkaline media. Coulometric data indicate the exchange of two electrons per molecule, while infrared spectroscopic data reveal that the reduction process involves the azomethine (〉C=N—) rather than the carbonyl group or the N—N bond. A mechanism for the electrode reaction is postulated, and a pulse polarographic method for the quantitative determination of pyrazon is proposed. The detection limit achieved by differential pulse polarography in a 1.0 M sulfuric medium is 7 × 10-8 M (0.015 ppm).

    Description / Table of Contents: Diese Untersuchung befaßt sich mit einigen kinetischen Merkmalen der Reaktion von n-Butylisocyanat mit Polyvinylalkohol ohne jeden Katalysator und unter Verwendung von Triethylendiamin als Katalysator. Die Struktur der resultierenden Polymeren wurde mit Hilfe der IR-, 1H-, und 13C-NMR-Spektroskopie und chemischer Analyse ermittelt. Es wurden Vinylalkohol-Vinylbutylurethancopolymere (VAL-VBU) erhalten. Es ergab sich eine lineare Abhängigkeit der Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit von Polymer-, n-Butylisocyanat- und Triethylendiaminkonzentration. Die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeitskonstante nimmt mit zunehmender Reaktionszeit ab. Das kann mit der sterischen Hinderung durch die Urethangruppen, die entlang der Polymerkette eingebaut sind, erklärt werden. Die Aktivierungsenergie ergab sich zu 49,9 kJ/mol. Eine kinetische Untersuchung der homogenen Hydrolyse von VAL-VBU-Copolymeren wurde durchgefilhrt als Funktion der Basenkonzentration, der Temperatur und des VBU Gehalts. Es zeigte sich, daß die homogene Hydrolyse als Reaktion 1 . Ordnung verliluft, sowohl im Hinblick auf die Hydroxylionen als auch auf den VBU-Gehalt. Die Aktivierungsenergie filr die basenkatalysierte Hydrolyse betragt 79,3 kJ/mol. Die heterogene Hydrolyse von VAL-VBU-Copolymeren im basischen Medium zeigte, daß keine Hydrolyse unter diesen Bedingungen stattfand.
    Notes: This study is concerned with some kinetic features of the reaction of n-butyl isocyanate with poly(vinyl alcohol) without any catalyst and using triethylene diamine as catalyst. The structure of the resulting polymers was determined by means of IR, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy as well as by chemical analysis. Vinyl alcohol-vinyl butyl urethane (VAL-VBU) copolymers were obtained. It has been found a linear dependence of reaction rate on polymer, n-butyl isocyanate, and triethylene diamine concentrations. Reaction rate constant decreases as reaction time increases. It can be explained by steric hindrance phenomena due to urethane groups incorporated along the polymeric chain. The activation energy was found to be 49.9 kJ/mol. A kinetic study of the homogeneous hydrolysis of VAL-VBU copolymers has been made as a function of the base concentration, the temperature, and the VBU content. The homogeneous hydrolysis was found to be first order with respect to both hydroxyl ion and VBU contents. The activation energy for the base catalyzed homogeneous hydrolysis was found to be 79.3 kJ/mol. The heterogeneous hydrolysis of VAL-VBU copolymers in basic medium showed that no hydrolysis takes place under the conditions employed.

    Notes: Guthion, a pesticide, was determined by flow-injection analysis using single- and three-channel systems with and without a chemical reaction. The experimental variables involved in each case were investigated and optimized, and the analytical features of the two procedures were compared. A method based on the oxidation of anthranilic acid yielded in the alkaline hydrolysis of the pesticide at a glassy carbon electrode is proposed for its determination. The detection limit is 4.1 × 10-7 M, and the relative standard deviation is 2.2% (n = 10) when the hydrolysis reaction takes place within the threeenamel manifold.
