Acetyl Coenzyme A and Other S-Acyl Compounds in the Utilization of Energy by Living CellsThe energy-rich primary product of the pyruvic acid oxidation („activated acetic acid“) has been recognized as an S-acetyl compounds of coenzyme A. A series of observations indicates that primary S-acyl compounds are also built up in the dehydrogenating decarboxylisation of α-ketoglutaric acid and in the triose phosphate dehydrogenation. The energy content of these compounds is utilized for the synthesis of adenosin triphosphate from adenosin diphosphate and an inorganic phosphate. The importance of these findings with respect to the mechanism of the energy utilization in the carbohydrate oxidation is discussed.
Notes:
