    Notes: We are exploring the electronic properties of novel materials such as conducting polymer-coated polyester fibres and charge transfer complexes configured in resistive, gated (FET) and diode configurations. In this paper we will consider several areas where we are attempting to make sensors and/ or primitive devices from molecular materials. Our most successful result so far is the temperature-dependent resistivity of polypyrrole-coated polyester fibres. Here we find that the conductivity is thermally activated and produces a reliable, highly sensitive indicator of temperature in a cryogenic environment. Using parallel configurations of fibres, sensors with different limiting resistances can be fabricated. We have also placed insulated electrical gates on single crystals of various metallic and insulating charge transfer salts and have attempted to alter the charge transfer character by the application of high electric fields. With polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) insulating layers, gate voltages up to 150 V have been acquired with no leakage or heating. Similar measurements on diode devices fabricated from charge transfer complexes with different electronic structures are also in progress, and our preliminary results will be presented. Prospects and plans for developing these materials into viable sensors and devices are discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The sorption of CO2 and CH4 and their binary mixtures in poly(phenlene oxide) (PPO) and its carboxylated derivative (CPPO) is reported. All mixed gas data are accurately described by the dual model sorption model, which predicts mixed gas sorption on the basis of pure gas sorption parameters. The present paper extends the mixed gas sorption data base to include polymers having a wide range of permeabilities and chemical structures. The confirmed accuracy of the model for these systems provides strong support for applying the mixed gas dual mode sorption model to any gas/polymer system. A numerical simulation of the mixed gas sorption experiment is also presented which greatly simplifies the experimental procedures used to maintain the partial pressure of one of the gas components at a constant value over the course of a sorption isotherm measurement. By establishing the appropriate amounts of each gas component which are added to the polymer sample chamber of the sorption cell, the mixed gas apparatus simulator (MIGAS) can be used to maintain the partial pressure of one of the components to within 1% of the desired value.

    Notes: Experiments performed in batch fermentation under phosphate-limited growth conditions showed that the citric acid yield was inversely related to the excess nitrogen concentration in the medium. Results from chemostat culture confirmed a negative relationship between the citric acid yield and both the specific growth rate and the nitrogen consumption rate. This is evidence for nitrogen catabolite repression. A fed-batch fermentation performed under dual phosphate/nitrogen limitation produced results very similar to those from a culture limited by nitrogen alone. There is no advantage in maintaining an excess of phosphate during citric acid production and the process will therefore be more economic when operated under dual limitation conditions.

    Notes: Studies in conventional batch culture confirmed that the maximum citric acid production rate occurred prior to exhaustion of the growth-limiting nutrient, i.e., when the growth rate was nonzero. The effects of dilution rate and the culture dissolved oxygen tension (DOT) were studied in chemostat culture. Maximum citric acid yield and production rate were observed at low dilution rate (0.017 h-1) and high DOT value (90% of saturation). These findings were applied to a nitrogen-limited fed batch culture, and allowed a productivity increase of 100% when compared with conventional batch culture.

    Notes: The accuracy of kinetic and stoichiometric data obtained from most laboratory-scale continuous-culture equipment, particularly involving gaseous measurements, may be much lower than many workers realize, despite the use of good quality instruments. For example, errors in specific oxygen uptake measurements (QO2) easily can be as high as ±100%. This article assesses the accuracies of individual instruments and of the overall system in greater detail than has previously been reported and suggestions are made as to how the errors can be reduced to acceptable levels.

    Notes: Two models for the permeability of pure gases have been extended to include binary gas mixtures. The first is an extension of a pure gas permeability model, proposed by Petropoulos, which is based on gradients of chemical potential. This model predicts the permeability of components in a gas mixture solely on the basis of competition for sorption sites within the polymer matrix. The second mixed gas model follows an earlier analysis by Barrer for pure gases which includes the effects of saturation of Langmuir sites on the diffusion as well as the sorption processes responsible for permeation. This generalized “competitive sorption/diffusion” model includes the effect of each gas component on the sorption and diffusion of the other component in the mixture. The flux equations from these two models have been solved numerically to predict the permeability of gas mixtures on the basis of pure gas sorption and transport parameters. Both the mixed gas Petropoulos and competitive sorption/diffusion model predictions are compared with predictions from the earlier simple competitive sorption model based on gradients of concentration. An analysis of all three models is presented for the case of CO2/CH4 permeability in poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO). As expected, the competitive sorption/diffusion model predicts lower permeability than either of the models which consider only competitive sorption effects. The permeability depression of both CO2 and CH4 predicted by the competitive sorption/diffusion model is roughly twice that predicted by the competitive sorption model, whereas the mixed gas Petropoulos model predictions for both gases lie between the other two model predictions. For the PPO/CO2/CH4 system, the methane permeability data lie above the predictions of all three models, whereas CO2 data lie below the predictions of all models. Consequently, the competitive sorption/diffusion model gives the most accurate prediction for CO2, while the simple competitive sorption model is best for methane. The effects of mixed gas sorption, fugacity, and CO2-induced dilation were considered and do not explain the inaccuracies of any of the models. The relatively small errors in mixed gas permeability predictions using either of the three models are likely to be related to “transport plasticization” of PPO owing to high levels of CO2 sorption and its effect on polymer segmental motions and gas diffusivity.

    Notes: Incorporation of bis(tributyltin) oxide into a Hypalon paint system results in the formation of tributyltin chloride and a second organotin species, the identity of which remains uncertain. Both compounds are appreciably retained by the dried paint matrix, thereby resulting in marked reduction in the release rate of the tributyltin moiety into aqueous systems. In contrast, tributyltin acetate, tributyltin carbonate and bis(triphenyltin) oxide appear to be incorporated into the paint film in a largely unchanged state. In the case of triphenyltin chloride and triphenyltin acetate, evidence of dephenylation to form diphenyl- and monophenyl-tin compounds has been obtained.
