Notes: The complex series of reactions that takes place between WCl6 and cyclopentene was studied spectroscopically. The products of reaction remain soluble when chlorobenzene is used as solvent. A number of intermediates was observed and the kinetics of formation and removal of these was studied in detail. A complex series of reactions was postulated to account for these changes and the significance of each reaction to the overall scheme was determined by computer simulation of the changes that occur. One of the products has particular significance in the scheme of reactions since it is believed that this species is eventually responsible for the monometallic initiation of the polymerization of cyclopentene. The reaction was also studied gas chromatographically when it was shown that the reaction is accompanied by the formation of a complex mixture of products. One of these products was shown to have the mass spectrum that would be expected of 3-chlorocyclopentene and a reaction scheme that would account for its formation is postulated. The reactions involved in the generation of centres active towards the formation of polypentenamer were considered for both monometallic and bimetallic (WCl6/AlR3) catalyst.

Notes: An apparatus was constructed which would allow vinyl-type monomers (and others) to polymerize at ambient temperatures in the presence of an inductively coupled RF field. The details of the construction of the system are reported along with preliminary results obtained from nine monomers: styrene, methylvinyldichlorosilane, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, vinyl fluoride, 1,1-difluoroethylene, vinyl chloride, ethylene, and 1,3-butadiene.

Notes: A study has been made on the plasma polymerization of styrene monomer in a cold, low-power, inductively coupled RF plasma. Styrene monomer yielded an insoluble, crosslinked film which was slightly colored. A kinetic study is reported for styrene. The effects of power level, bleed rate of monomer, pressure, and reactor geometry on the rate of polymer formation are reported. A mechanism is postulated for plasma polymerization. It was found that the initiation step was the rate controlling step and that the reaction followed a cationic polymerization scheme. Both crosslinking and discoloration of the polymers occur at the time of polymerization and are not a result of exposure of the reacted polymer to the plasma. The polymerization was shown to take place in the bulk phase as well as on the reaction wall surfaces.

Notes: Plastics and elastomers were prepared, physical state determined by the side chains attached to the phosphorus-nitrogen backbone. The poly(aryloxyphosphazenes) displayed a high degree of flame retardancy in the uncured, unfilled state. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) values varied from 27 to 33 for nonhalogenated materials and from 38 to 65 for halogenated materials. These values qualify all poly(aryloxyphosphazenes) studied as flame retardants according to the generally accepted definition (LOI ≥ 27). Materials subjected to the National Bureau of Standards Smoke Test gave encouraging results. The [(C6H5O)2PN-(4-C2H5C6H4O)2PN]n elastomer was investigated for application as a fire retardant insulating foam. Closed-cell foams produced from this copolymer showed much improved fire retardancy and smoke generation compared to commercially available fire retardant foam insulations.

Notes: The evolution of the latex particle diameter distribution during batch emulsion polymerization is investigated, with emphasis on changes in the breadth of the size distribution. A model utilizing a surface area-dependent volumetric growth rate of a single particle results in a time-invariant standard deviation of the size distribution during periods of particle growth only. This behavior is reconciled with some experimental observations by considering the occurrence of particle nucleation during some part of the growth interval. Conclusions based on the results of the model suggest that higher inhibitor and low emulsifier concentrations favor narrow particle size distributions.

Notes: A novel method for crosslinking polyetheretherketone via imine formation at carbonyl groups is presented. In polyetheretherketone these Schiff bases form short, stiff crosslink junctions which are stable up to 630°C. Dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of polyetheretherketone and imine crosslinked polyetheretherketone are reviewed. A large reduction in the temperature sensitivity of the material stiffness has been achieved. Increases in the glass transition temperature from 143°C to greater than 280°C have been obtained.

Notes: Using an information theoretic formalism, we optimize classes of amino acid substitution to be maximally indicative of local protein structure. Our statistically-derived classes are loosely identifiable with the heuristic constructions found in previously published work. However, while these other methods provide a more rigid idealization of physicochemically constrained residue substitution, our classes provide substantially more structural information with many fewer parameters. Moreover, these substitution classes are consistent with the paradigmatic view of the sequence-to-structure relationship in globular proteins which holds that the three-dimensional architecture is predominantly determined by the arrangement of hydrophobic and polar side chains with weak constraints on the actual amino acid identities. More specific constraints are imposed on the placement of prolines, glycines, and the charged residues. These substitution classes have been used in highly accurate predictions of residue solvent accessibility. They could also be used in the identification of homologous proteins, the construction and refinement of multiple sequence alignments, and as a means of condensing and codifying the information in multiple sequence alignments for secondary structure prediction and tertiary fold recognition. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
