Keywords: Artificial satellites in oceanography. ; Electronic books.
Description / Table of Contents: The author's main research activity for the last 20 years as a researcher and an academic teacher of physical oceanography has been in the field of satellite oceanography. This unique book reflects the breadth of that knowledge. It is the first academic text devoted to describing and explaining the impact that satellite image data have made to our understanding of how the ocean behaves.

Notes: The rate of crosslinking of concentrated gelatin solutions in water has been measured by means of a gelation timer. Some effects of temperature, pH, crosslinking agent, and gelatin concentration have been measured. The crosslinking agents have varied from fast-acting chrome alum, glutaraldehyde, and a carbodiimide to slow-acting mucobromic acid and dialdehyde starches. Detailed crosslinking mechanisms are discussed for dimethylol urea, mucobromic acid, and several dialdehyde crosslinking agents. Some effects of urea and other additives on the dimethylol urea crosslinking rate are described.

Notes: Reproducible potentiometric titrations of water soluble electron exchange polymers have been obtained. Sulfonated polyvinylhydroquinone homopolymers and a sulfonated copolymer of vinylhydroquinone with α-methylstyrene were prepared by treatment of the corresponding dibenzoates with concentrated sulfuric acid. Oxidative titrations with ceric sulfate and bromine water are described. It was found that the apparent standard oxidation potential depends on the degree of reduction and is independent of molecular weight, for large molecular weight. These experimental facts are in agreement with a recent theoretical analysis. The standard oxidation (midpoint) potentials of the polymers are somewhat higher than similarly treated isopropylhydroquinone dibenzoate, model monomer. Some effects of salt and pH on the polymer titration behavior are described. Although the polymer potentials are established slowly on platinum electrodes, ultraviolet absorption studies have shown that the oxidation reaction itself is rapid. A pink-colored intermediate was observed. The effects of sulfonation of two hydroquinones on their oxidation potentials and ultraviolet absorption spectra are described.

Description: The viability of healthy single stranded dolphins as immediate release candidates has received little attention. Responders have been reluctant to release lone delphinids due to their social needs, even when they pass the same health evaluations as mass stranded animals. This study tracked postrelease success of 34 relocated and released satellite tagged delphinids from single and mass strandings. Three postrelease survival parameters (transmission duration, swim speed, and daily distance) were examined to evaluate whether they differed among single stranded/single released (SS/SR), mass stranded/single released (MS/SR), or mass stranded/mass released (MS/MR) dolphin groups. Comparisons were also made between healthy and borderline release candidates. Satellite tags transmitted for a mean of 21.2 d (SD = 19.2, range = 1–79), daily distance traveled was 42.0 km/d (11.25, 20.96–70.72), and swim speed was 4.3 km/h (1.1, 2.15–8.54). Postrelease parameters did not differ between health status groups, however, SS/SR dolphins transmitted for a shorter mean duration than MS/MR and MS/SR groups. Postrelease vessel-based surveys confirmed conspecific group location for two healthy, MS/SR dolphins. Overall, these results support the potential to release healthy stranded single delphinids; however, further refinement of health assessment protocols for these challenging cases is needed.
