Abstract To clarify the changes in vascular resistance inCrohn's disease, we studied changes in the thickness ofarterial media histometrically. The resected specimensof mesenterium and intestine from 18 patients with Crohn's disease were used. Each intestinallesion was classified into three grades: noinflammation, exudative change, and fibrosing change. Inthe ileum, significant atrophy in the media of thesubmucosal peripheral arteries was noted during exudativeand fibrosing changes, while in the submucosal largervessels or in the mesenterium, the thickness of thearterial media did not change. In the colon, atrophy in the media of the submucosal arteries wasnoted in all stages except in the larger vessel duringexudative change, while no significant changes werenoted in the mesenterium. In conclusion, it is suggested that circulatory disturbance occurs even in theearly stage in Crohn's disease, and there seems to beincreased vascular resistance in the area between thedeep submucosal and the distal mesentericarteries.
