Summary Epitheliomuscular cells largely corresponding to those of cnidarians have been found in the mesenteria of Lingula and in various coelomic channels of Branchiostoma. They are characterized by basal extensions containing thin and thick myofilaments. In Lingula they also bear an apical cilium.
