Notes: Eighty one polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and nineteen chlorinated pesticide standards have been analyzed on a newly developed apolar high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC) column. Emphasis was placed on the determination of PCB indicator congeners which are part of national regulations, and of toxic coplanar PCB congeners. The new column enables almost unambiguous quantification of the PCB indicator congeners (PCB 138 can be separated from both PCB 163 and PCB 164; PCB 28 and PCB 31 were also separated and no coelution was observed for PCB 52, PCB 118, and PCB 180). The new column furnished better results than CP-Sil 8 for the analysis of PCB indicator congeners in a sample of seal blubber.

Notes: Perdeuterated α-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-PDHCH) was synthesized and isolated in pure form. α-PDHCH was baseline separated from unlabeled α-HCH by high resolution gas chromatography on different stationary phases. α-PDHCH was also resolved into its enantiomeric forms by application of a chiral GC phase. Furthermore, chiral chromatography of a mixture of labeled α-PDHDH and unlabeled α-HCH resulted in four peaks. Standard solutions of α-PDHCH are recommended both as recovery standard for sample clean-up and as internal standard for the quantitation of chlorinated hydrocarbons with GC/MS or GC/ECD in environmental samples.

Notes: The enantiomers of aliphatic alcohols are transformed by a new chiral reagent (S)-Trolox methyl ether to their diastereomeric esters which are separated by capillary GC or SFC on achiral columns. The applicability of this reagent and its superiority to the hitherto known reagents are demonstrated by selected examples.

Notes: A simple and rapid method for counting the number of internal disulfide bridges in a protein by incubation with 2-mercaptoethanol and electrospray mass spectrometry analysis of the products was developed. 2-Mercaptoethanol yields intermediate mixed disulfides during reduction of a protein. This results in a molecular weight increase of the protein by 78 Da per disulfide bond, which can easily be determined by electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS). The number of mercaptoethanol adducts observed by ESMS reveals the number of disulfide bridges in the peptide or protein. Since the protein-mercaptoethanol-disulfide bonds are themselves further reduced by excess mercaptoethanol, the course of the reaction has to be followed in order to detect the maximum number of intermediates. Owing to the volatility of mercaptoethanol, samples can be taken out of the reaction solution for MS analysis without prior purification. Successful experiments were carried out using proteins with one, two, four or six S—S-bonds, covering a mass range from about 1 to over 23 kDa.

Notes: Four chiral stationary phases containing modified cyclodextrines diluted in or chemically bonded to a non-chiral phase were used to resolve chiral organochlorine compounds such as α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH), perdeuterated α-HCH (α-PDHCH), β-and γ-pentachlorocyclohexene (PCCH), oxychlordane, cis-and trans-chlor- dane, cis- and trans-heptachlorepoxide, PCB 95, PCB 132, PCB 149, and Chiral tozaphenes. The elution order was determined by analyzing standards with known enantiomeric excesses.Furthermore, an internal standard was used to even out slight variations in the ratio of peak hights of enantiomers which were determined from injection to injection.None of the chiral stationary phases resolved all chiral organochlorine compounds. However, the β-TBDM(35% heptakis (6-O-t-butyldimethylsilyl-2,3-di-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin in OV 1701) column allowed the separation of all compounds under investigation except for PCB 95 and chiral toxaphenes.Emphasis was placed on the separation of as many as possible enantiomers on a chiral phase by application of one temperature program and with respect to unambiguous quantitation of biological samples such as bludder and liver of marine and terrestrial mammals.

Notes: Pumps and compressors for high pressures - strength, seals, wear. In high pressure processes pumps and compressors are used for the pressure range of 100 to 4 000 bar. Very careful design is necessary because of the extreme mechanical demands. The special features of high pressure technology are explained. The methods used for generating high pressures - displacement or fluid flow machine - impose design limitations, partly by the final temperature, Mach number, material fatigue, or vibrations. A survey of typical high pressure pumps and compressors shows the range and limitations of application. There is a definite trend to leak-free systems. The best design of thick-walled components with pulsating pressureload avoids grooves, requires smooth surfaces, and uses tough, clean, and high-strength steels. The various designs of dynamic seals are explained and the state of the art is depicted. Detailed reference is also made to the exceptionally difficult wear problem of oscillating pump valves with abrasive suspensions.

Notes: Leakfree oscillating positive-displacement pumps - state of the art and trends of development. Leak- and maintenance-free oscillating positive-displacement pumps are very important for avoiding pollution and improving the reliability of plants. Technical progress in the field of hydraulic diaphragm- and tube-pumps for high pressures are explained. The actual data (pressure, efficiency, temperature) and experience with different fluids are surveyed. The various hydraulic control systems, the diaphragm design, and methods for rupture-control are compared. Further development trends are explained.

Notes: Dosage of solids and liquids. Dosage of reaction components is an important step in chemical engineering processes. In an age of increasing automation, the development of dosage procedures is highly topical; electronics and data processing have long made inroads into dosage procedures. However, today's more stringent demands with regard to pressure, temperature, viscosity, and abrasion necessitate intensified research and development efforts. The present article considers mainly volumetric and geometric dosage methods. The many types of metering pumps cover a large area of dosage of liquids. Minimal flow rates, pressures up to several 1000 bar, and also dangerous and difficult fluids can all be safely handled. Leakproof designs with membranes, tubes, or bellows as displacement devices are particularly important nowadays. Volumetric dosage of solids requires establishment of a reproducible packing density. The survey considers the principle methods of dosage (also against pressure) with special emphasis on screw dosage. Gravimetric dosage methods are extremely reliable and accurate but generally require volumetric systems for energy supply. Especially when used in combination with metering pumps or screw dosage, differential balances have numerous possible applications.
