    Notes: Abstract  Effectiveness of indirect selection for grain yield was investigated among eight bread wheat lines, selected in a stress environment in the East African Highlands, where they showed a wide response to yellow rust, the biotic factor causing the stress. The lines were intercrossed to give an 8×8F1 diallel, which was grown in this same environment for three consecutive growing seasons during 1994 and 1995. Half of the last trial was sprayed with fungicide. From the estimates of narrow-sense heritabilities for yield and yellow rust severity, and the genetic correlation between them, indirect selection for yield in the unsprayed plots, obtained by choosing the most resistant 5% of this material was, on average, 12% higher than selecting for yield itself. In the fungicide-treated plots, indirect selection was only 73% as efficient as direct selection. The implications of these results for selecting for yield in stress environments are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  Several methods are available for estimating heritability in disomic species, including parent-offspring regression, realized heritability, intraclass correlations of recombinant inbred lines, and diallel-cross analysis. Estimates were obtained by these various methods for a set of eight bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) lines adapted to the East African highlands, which had been intercrossed and selfed in a half-diallel arrangement to give F1, F2 and F3 generations, and F6 recombinant inbred lines. Significant genetic variation existed among parents and crosses for both grain yield and yellow rust resistance in all generations. Based on the heritability calculated from the analysis of F6 recombinant inbred lines, analysis of the F2 diallel crosses was recommended for determining the heritability of both characters in early segregating generations. The results also suggest that a form of tandem selection may be effective in developing locally adapted germplasm which combines high grain yield with yellow rust resistance.

    Notes: Abstract  Complete F1 and F2 diallel crosses were used to investigate the inheritance of yellow rust resistance among eight bread wheat lines, developed by CIMMYT for the East African Highlands, which showed a wide response to this disease. Both diallel sets were grown at a site with a high incidence of yellow rust, although for one season, during which the F1 diallel was grown, disease incidence was unusually low. Analyses disclosed the presence of additive, dominance and epistatic effects among those genes controlling rust resistance, with the former being the most important. At normal disease levels, excluding two arrays having resistant common parents removed non-allelic interactions from the F1 diallels. For all F2 diallels, and the remaining F1 diallel, omitting two arrays based on susceptible parents removed these interactions. Local selection of material from a broadly based germplasm appears to be a feasible method of developing adapted cultivars resistant to endemic diseases.

    Notes: The type of surface of the perforated plate influences the performance of a perforated-plate column. Pilot plant data on a 4-in column for the system toluenediethylamine-water at 20°C. show that when the water phase is dispersed and the direction of mass transfer is from the continuous toluene to the dispersed water phase polyethylene plates give a continuous stream of droplets and a higher efficiency, but that when the direction of mass transfer is from the dispersed water to the continuous toluene phase the metal plates give the higher efficiency.

    Description: Background:Advancing age is associated with a greater prevalence of coronary artery disease in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and with a higher risk of complications after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Whether the efficacy of CABG compared with medical therapy (MED) in patients with heart failure caused by ischemic cardiomyopathy is the same in patients of different ages is unknown.Methods:A total of 1212 patients (median follow-up, 9.8 years) with ejection fraction ≤35% and coronary disease amenable to CABG were randomized to CABG or MED in the STICH trial (Surgical Treatment for Ischemic Heart Failure).Results:Mean age at trial entry was 60 years; 12% were women; 36% were nonwhite; and the baseline ejection fraction was 28%. For the present analyses, patients were categorized by age quartiles: quartile 1, ≤54 years; quartile, 2 〉54 and ≤60 years; quartile 3, 〉60 and ≤67 years; and quartile 4, 〉67 years. Older versus younger patients had more comorbidities. In contrast, cardiovascular mortality was not statistically significantly different across the spectrum of age in the MED group (53% versus 49% for quartiles 4 and 1, respectively; log-rank P =0.388) or CABG group (39% versus 35% for quartiles 4 and 1, respectively; log-rank P =0.103). Cardiovascular deaths accounted for a greater proportion of deaths in the youngest versus oldest quartile (79% versus 62%). The effect of CABG versus MED on all-cause mortality tended to diminish with increasing age ( P interaction =0.062), whereas the benefit of CABG on cardiovascular mortality was consistent over all ages ( P interaction =0.307). There was a greater reduction in all-cause mortality or cardiovascular hospitalization with CABG versus MED in younger compared with older patients ( P interaction =0.004). In the CABG group, cardiopulmonary bypass time or days in intensive care did not differ for older versus younger patients. Conclusions: CABG added to MED has a more substantial benefit on all-cause mortality and the combination of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular hospitalization in younger compared with older patients.     Description: Despite declines in heart failure morbidity and mortality with current therapies, rehospitalization rates remain distressingly high, substantially affecting individuals, society, and the economy. As a result, the need for new therapeutic advances and novel medical devices is urgent. Disease-related left ventricular remodeling is a complex process involving cardiac myocyte growth and death, vascular rarefaction, fibrosis, inflammation, and electrophysiological remodeling. Because these events are highly interrelated, targeting a single molecule or process may not be sufficient. Here, we review molecular and cellular mechanisms governing pathological ventricular remodeling.
