Beschreibung: Distribution and movement patterns of Antarctic blue whales Balaenoptera musculus intermedia at large temporal and spatial scales are still poorly understood. The objective of this study was to explore spatio-temporal distribution patterns of Antarctic blue whales in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, using passive acoustic monitoring data. Multi-year data were collected between 2008 and 2013 by 11 recorders deployed in the Weddell Sea and along the Greenwich meridian. Antarctic blue whale Z-calls were detected via spectrogram cross-correlation. A Blue Whale Index was developed to quantify the proportion of time during which acoustic energy from Antarctic blue whales dominated over background noise. Our results show that Antarctic blue whales were acoustically present year-round, with most call detections between January and April. During austral summer, the number of detected calls peaked synchronously throughout the study area in most years, and hence, no directed meridional movement pattern was detectable. During austral winter, vocalizations were recorded at latitudes as high as 69°S, with sea ice cover exceeding 90%, suggesting that some Antarctic blue whales overwinter in Antarctic waters. Polynyas likely serve as an important habitat for baleen whales during austral winter, providing food and reliable access to open water for breathing. Overall, our results support increasing evidence of a complex and non-obligatory migratory behavior of Antarctic blue whales, potentially involving temporally and spatially dynamic migration routes and destinations, as well as variable timing of migration to and from the feeding grounds.

Beschreibung: Time series data of physical oceanography (seawater conductivity, temperature, pressure, salinity), ocean current velocities and hydroacoustics were obtained from mooring F4-18 in the Fram Strait in July 2018 - August 2019 as part of the Helmholtz infrastructure program Frontiers in Arctic Marine Monitoring (FRAM) and the long-term monitoring program at AWI HAUSGARTEN. The mooring was deployed during Polarstern expedition PS114, and recovered during PS121. The attached archive contains raw data files of 6 Seabird SBE37 microcats (nominal depths: 63m, 150m, 250m, 500m, 731m, 1202m; sampling interval 1h), one RDI Workhorse Longranger ADCP (depth: 380m; sampling interval: 1h) and two AADI RCM11 current meters (depths: 730m, 1208m; sampling interval: 2h). The mooring also included a Develogic Sonovault (nominal depth: 800m; data archived elsewhere). Auxiliary information such as sensor calibration sheets, mooring diagrams and schedule files are also provided, if applicable.

Beschreibung: Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) data were collected by recorder SV1026 of type Sono.Vault (manufactured by develogic GmbH, Hamburg, Germany) at 78.8335° N, 6.9998° E, mooring F4-15, in Fram Strait. During a deployment period from June 2012 to June 2015, passive acoustic data were collected from June 2012 to November 2012 (recording period) by SV1026 as part of the Frontiers in Arctic Marine Monitoring (FRAM) observatory in Fram Strait. The recorder was moored at 743 m depth and scheduled to record continuously at a sample rate of 5,333 Hz. Further details about the data acquisition and processing of this data set can be found in the accompanying metadata file (see Additional metadata) as well as the data processing report (see Data Processing Report). Passive acoustic data archived here represent data processing Level 1+, according to the standards defined in the associated Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) Glossary (Thomisch et al. 2023a). Further information on data processing with regard to data preparation and standardization can be found in the associated SOP Part 1: Data preparation and standardization (Thomisch et al. 2023b).
