Abstract Optical nutation and free induction decay (FID) signals are reduced when the molecules producing them are in resonance with counterpropagating laser beams. Dips in the transient signals can be identified which correspond to transitions separated by less than their Doppler widths, and the dephasing and decay of the individual levels investigated.
