    Beschreibung: The soilscapes along the southern and western coast of Crete (Greece) are dominated by coarse-grained reddish-brown slope sediments whose natural (pre-anthropogenic) configuration and properties are difficult to reconstruct due to the long history of intense land use. As a consequence, datable terrestrial sediment archives of pre-anthropogenic genesis are scarce. We present preliminary results of a study performed on an accumulation within an alluvial fan south of Stomio Bay in southwestern Crete. The studied profile is located in a small depression and is composed of a sequence of sandy to silty yellowish-brown calcareous sediments overlying coarse-grained slope sediments, including a fossil topsoil horizon. Based on macroscopic, micromorphological, geochemical, geophysical and mineralogical analysis, we interpret the fine-grained sediments to have a local aeolian origin. OSL dating indicates a final deposition phase during the early Holocene. Considering the scarcity of early Holocene terrestrial archives in Crete, the analysed profile provides valuable data for the reconstruction of landscape dynamics and paleoecological conditions as well as soil-sediment configurations during this time period. Additional research is needed to address the specific source area(s) as well as the ages of the deposition of slope sediments and formation of the fossil topsoil.

    Beschreibung: In 2018 and 2019, driving cores were carried out to reconstruct the Holocene deposition history of the Loosbach valley at Pestenacker, an UNESCO world heritage site of Late Neolithic wetland occupation. A hand-held Cobra Pro (Atlas Copco) driving core drilling system. The recovered cores were documented and sampled in a 5-10 cm resolution for subsequent laboratory analysis. Bulk samples from RK8, RK10, RK12, RK15 and RK16 cores were used for subsequent geochemical analysis. All samples were air dried, sieved (2 mm sieve) and weighed. Macroscopic charcoal and wood remains were removed and weighed. For calculating the total organic matter (TOC), we measured the content of total carbon (TC) by using a CNS analyser vario EL cube (Elementar) and determined the content of inorganic carbon (TIC) by calcimeter measurements (Scheibler method, Eijkelkamp). Resulting values of organic carbon (TOC) were multiplied by 1.72 in order to obtain contents of organic matter (OM). The siliciclastic content was calculated from the sum of carbonates and organic matter and subtracted this from 100 %. The content of charcoal and wood remains [%] is in relation to the total dry weight of the fine soil. The stratigraphical and geochemical findings were classified into sedimentological units. The detailed descriptions of the stratigraphical data are given in the document “Detailed lithological descriptions of recovered cores from the Loosbach valley at Pestenacker”.

    Beschreibung: The North African desert margin is considered one of the areas most sensitive to future climate changes. Improved knowledge about Holocene climatic variability and environmental responses on millennial to centennial scale will help to refine scenarios related to future climate changes. This data set presents 198 bulk sample-based Spectro Xepos XRF measurements. Bulk samples from the recovered cores were analysed using a Spectro Xepos X-ray fluorescence instrument. For the XRF sample preparation, air-dried bulk material (4 g) was sieved (2 mm). The sample was then homogenised using a Retsch vibrating mill MM 200. Pressed pellets were produced with a Vaneox press at 20 t for 2 min. The measurements were carried out in a He atmosphere.
