Notes: Summary The effects of calcium and magnesium on parathyroid hormone release from eight adenomas causing primary hyperparathyroidism and six hyperplastic glands causing hypercalcemic secondary hyperparathyroidism were investigated in vitro using single cell suspensions from the respective tissue. We observed suppression of parathyroid hormone release with increasing concentrations of either cation. The quantitative hormone secretions of both adenomatous and hyperplastic glands was identical.

Notes: Abstract We present two possible sequential decay mechanisms which correspond either to an inverse fusion process (detailed balance) or to a generalised fission process (transition state theory). We compare the corresponding transition rates and try to understand the implications of these two different choices on the behaviour of mass and charge multiplicities. Deviations from percolation calculation predictions and the experiment are also analysed.

Notes: Summary Between 01. 01.1987 and 31.12.1990 a primary operation was performed on 126 patients in the Dept. of General Surgery, University of Marburg Hospital for primary hyperparathyroidism due to a parathyroid adenoma. Their clinically relevant data were prospectively documented. In 6 patients (4.8%) a total of 7 cystic parathyroid adenomas was found. While there was no difference in age- and sex-distribution, patients with cystic adenomas were found to have markedly higher serum parathormone and alkaline phosphatase levels than patients with solid adenomas. Calcium levels were similar in both groups. Cystic adenomas were much heavier than solid adenomas. A significant number of cystic adenomas was found to be displaced into the posterior mediastinum. The property of cystic parathyroid adenomas to be frequently located away from their usual anatomical position can make the intraoperative search for them difficult.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the nature of the disassembly process leading to the mass and isotopic distributions of fragments which were recently measured in the reaction40Ar on13C at an energy of 27.5 MeV per nucleon. The experimental distributions of intermediate and heavy mass species are compatible with a sequential decay mechanism. Calculated isotopic distributions are also in satisfactory agreement with the experiment. A moment analysis of the mass distributions in the spirit of percolation theory is performed. We do not see the expected critical behaviour of the system as a function of the temperature. We present some arguments about the reasons for this behaviour.

Notes: Abstract In an attempt to separate preequilibrium and thermalised emissions of light particles in low impact parameter heavy-ion collisions, the40Ar+24Mg reaction has been studied at 27.5 MeV/nucleon. Exclusive measurements have permitted us to examine, in some detail, heavy fragments and charged particles (p, d, t,α-particle). The fragments recognized as evaporation residues have been selected and, due to inverse kinematic conditions, the related preequilibrium and statistical emissions of light particles resulting from incomplete fusion reaction appear to be distinguishable to a fair extent. This separation is fully supported by Monte Carlo calculations. Some experimental characteristics of the light particles have been examined and compared to the predictions of dynamical calculations. These calculations, associating a preequilibrium (interpreted as prompt emitted particles) model with a statistical-decay model, follow the evolution of the collision from the point of contact between the projectile and the target to the final evaporation-residue formation on an event by event basis. The predictions of these calculations have been compared to experimental data and satisfactory agreement is achieved for fragment-mass distribution, proton-energy spectra, and proton-angular distribution.
