    Description / Table of Contents: This textbook deals with the most important items in Marine Geology, including some pioneer work. The list of topics has grown greatly in the last few decades beyond the items identified by Eugen Seibold as central and now includes prominently such things as methane and climate change; that is, the carbon cycle and the Earth system as a whole. Relevant geophysical, geochemical, sedimentological and paleontological methods are shortly described. They should allow the reader to comment on new results about plate tectonics, marine sedimentation from the coasts to the deep sea, climatological aspects, paleoceanology and the use of the sea floor. The text tries to transmit to the reader excitement of marine geological research both aboard and in modern laboratories. Basic mineralogical, geochemical, biological and other relevant data and a detailed list of books and symposia are given in an Appendix. This Introduction builds on the third edition of “The Sea Floor” by E. Seibold and W.H. Berger. While much of the original text was written by Seibold, a considerable portion of the material presented in this edition is new, taking into account the recent great shift in marine geological research, some of it with great relevance to human concerns arising in a rapidly changing world

    Description: EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT):A varve chronology with annual resolution (AD 1117-1992) has been developed recently for Santa Barbara Basin. Varve thickness and water content show an exponential trend consistent with expected patterns in the presence of sediment compaction over time. Annual varve thickness was decomposed into orthogonal components using singular spectrum analysis (SSA) to identify and retrieve inter-decadal oscillations. ... This suggests a connection with global-scale decadal cycles identified in the subtropical Pacific gyre circulation and, possibly, with solar-driven phenomena. The near-1600 AD event coincides with (a) a similarly sudden change of state in nearby Santa Monica Basin that triggered the onset of anoxic conditions and the preservation of laminated sediments, (b) an extreme drought over the American Southwest, (c) a transformation of the age structure in a number of forest populations throughout Arizona and New Mexico. Total organic carbon burial flux in Santa Barbara Basin varves also shows a marked change after AD 1600. A possible climatic link is proposed that involves pathways for moisture transport in the Southwest at decadal and longer time scales.

    Description: EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT):Torrey pine (Pinus torreyana Parry ex Carr.) has one of the most limited geographical ranges and population size in the Pinus genus; it is present only on Santa Rosa Island and on the coast between San Diego and Del Mar, where our research was conducted. A 168-year chronology (1827-1994) was developed using 28 increment cores extracted from 15 living and 2 dead stranding trees at Torrey Pines State Reserve, San Diego, California. ... The spatial correlation with western North America winter and spring precipitation, as well as with published tree-ring chronologies, indicates a connection with the American Southwest. Global correlation maps with winter sea level pressure and sea surface temperature are consistent with the hypothesis that San Diego precipitation is affected by a southerly displaced North Pacific storm track and by warmer water farther south, both leading to higher transport of lower latitude moisture.

    Description: We present oxygen and carbon isotope records for benthic foraminifers from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 805 and 806 for the last 650,000 yr. Comparison of these records (Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi) with similar records from elsewhere shows that they are of excellent quality. The oxygen isotope patterns provide no evidence for substantial deep-water cooling in the western equatorial Pacific during glacial times (in contrast to the eastern Pacific and to the deep Atlantic). The carbon isotope record largely reflects global patterns and is influenced by the changing production rate of NADW (as evidenced in Pacific-Atlantic delta13C differences). Changes in planktonic-benthic delta13C differences in these records provide support for increased productivity during glacial periods in the western equatorial Pacific, in agreement with other evidence.

    Description: Downcore changes in various carbonate dissolution indexes are documented for Hole 805C for the last 1.2 m.y. These indexes include degree of fragmentation of planktonic foraminifers, percent sand, abundance ratio of species of contrasting solution susceptibilities (Globigerinoides sacculifer vs. Pulleniatina, Globorotalia tumida, and Globorotalia menardii), and the difference in d18O between species of contrasting solution susceptibilities (G. sacculifer vs. Pulleniatina). These preservation indexes have been combined into a single composite dissolution index that corresponds closely to the d18O record. The rate of change of the oxygen isotope signal is also important, with glacial-to-interglacial transitions corresponding to maximum preservation events and vice versa. For information on changing productivity (which is important because an increased supply of organic matter may enhance dissolution by lowering pH upon degradation), we present the abundance of coarse-fraction benthic foraminifers per gram and the ratio between two planktonic foraminiferal species, one of which is strongly associated with equatorial upwelling (Globorotalia tumida vs. Pulleniatina). Our results suggest that productivity plays a subordinate role in determining foraminifer preservation. Furthermore, our results confirm previous observations that associate enhanced preservation events with glacial periods and with glacial-to-interglacial transitions. A correlation between preservation and sedimentation rates of these carbonate-rich sediments could not be established. Notable differences are present between the responses of individual dissolution indexes, indicating that processes other than dissolution determine proxy indexes to varying degrees.
