Notes: Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of [Zn(phen)(S2P(OiPr)2)2] (Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) has been determined by X-ray crystallography. It crystallizes in the Monoclinic system, space group C2/c, with lattice parameters a = 19.315(4), b = 10.438(2), c = 16.567(3)Å, β = 102.89 (3)°, and Z = 4. The complex has C2 symmetry. The coordination geometry of each Zn atom, by two S atoms from two (O,O′-diisopropyldithiophosphato) anions and by two N atoms from phenanthroline ligand, is that of a slightly distorted tetrahedron [Zn—S 2.2914(8)Å Zn—N 2.111(2)Å]. The Zn···S distances to the noncoordinated S atoms are long: 3.5276 Å, which are indicated that there are much weaker interactions between them.

Notes: The lanthanide nitrate complexes with 13-crown-4(13-C-4) have been prepared in AcOEt. These new complexes with the general formula Ln(NO3)3.(13-c-4) (Ln = La-Nd, Sm-Lu) have been characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR and 1H-NMR spectra, conductivity measurements, and TG-DTA techniques. The crystal and molecular structure of Nd(No3)3. (13-c-4) has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/a with Z = 8. Lattice parameters are a = 15.393(1), b = 12.578(1), c = 19.279(2) Å, β = 113.05(1)°, V = 3435 Å3, Dc = 2.01 g cm-3, μ = 31.0 cm-1 (Mok2), F(000) = 2056. The structure was solved by Patterson and Fourier techniques and refined by least-squares to a final conventional R value of 0.032 for 5218 independent reflections with I ≤ 3σ(I). There are two independent Nd(No3)3 · (13-C-4) monomers in one asymmetrical unit. The coordination numbers are ten in these two independent monomers.

Notes: The swelling of a nematogenic elastomer by an isotropic solvent was earlier predicted (Macromolecules 25, 445 (1992)) to be more complex than that of a classical elastomer. We extend here to the swelling by solvents having a nematic-isotropic transition in the pure phase in the region of that of the pure elastomer. The phase diagrams are qualitatively different from the first case, but still with the novel features of a triple point and a gel-gel biphasic gap reported in the initial study. Where the cross-coupling is stronger than the self-couplings we have an azeotropic point.

Notes: Metal-containing polyureas containing ionic linkages in the main chain can be obtained by the polyaddition reactions of 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate with mixtures of divalent metal salts of sulfanilic acid (p-aniline sulfonic acid [ASA] ) and 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane. Ba, Zn, Pb, and Sr were used as divalent metals, and their structures were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and IR. The polyureas were obtained with ASA(M) up to 100% in feed diamines and they were all soluble in DMF and DMSO. The inherent viscosity of the polyureas decreased markedly with an increase in metal content. The thermal properties of these polyureas were also investigated by DSC and TG. It was found that introducing the metal into the polyurea increased the thermal stability. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Polymeric substrates containing salicylidenimine ligands as discrete units can be obtained by reacting chloromethylated divinylbenzene styrene copolymer with amines, followed by condensation with salicylaldehyde. Polymer-supported Schiff base iron (III) complexes have been prepared and their IR spectra and Mössbauer spectra measured. Catalytic activity of supported complexes have been tested using decomposition of hydrogen peroxide as a model reaction.

Notes: Some 50 metal-containing polyimides with the metallic elements (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Co, Ni) in the main chain were prepared first by reacting pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with the mixture of divalent metal salts of p-aminobenzoic acid [ABA(M)] and 4, 4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (MDA) to form polyamic acid salts, and then the desired polyimides were obtained in high yield by separating the polyamic acid salts from the solvent and heating them under the imidization conditions. The structures of the samples were characterized by 1H-NMR and IR, and the thermal properties of polyimides were measured by TG-DTA. It was found that the thermooxidative stability of polyimides decreased as a small amount of a metal element was introduced, and the stability of polymer varied slightly or tends to constancy as the metal content increased to a certain degree. In addition, the inherent viscosity of the polyamic acid salt solutions also decreased markedly with the increase of the metal content. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The bismaleimides chain-extended by ureylene linkages were obtained by the reaction of a diamine with maleic anhydride (1 : 1 molar ratio) first and then by the reaction of the resulting solution with a diisocyanate, followed by the cyclodehydration of the diamic acid. The bismaleimides were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. The results of thermal analysis show that the solidification reaction takes place above 200°C for most bismaleimides and the crosslinking products decompose at higher temperatures. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
