    Notes: Numerous short features in the ocean magnetic anomaly patterns (25–100 nT amplitude, 8–25 km wavelength: tiny wiggles) have been identified in several independent magnetic profiles, and have been modelled either as short polarity intervals (‘cryptochrons’) or as palaeointensity fluctuations (Cande & Kent 1992). In the last few years, several authors (e.g. Tauxe et al. 1994; Lowrie & Lanci 1994; Hartl, Tauxe & Constable 1993) have identified, on high-resolution magnetostratigraphic sections, short polarity intervals, correlated with cryptochrons deriving from the ocean floor. The record of a previously undetected short normal-polarity event, lasting about 11 kyr, from an upper Tortonian-lower Messinian sedimentary sequence (e.g. Compagnoni et al. 1992) in central Italy (42.0°N, 13.0°E), is reported here. The north virtual geomagnetic polar (VGP) path of the R-N transition appears to be strongly confined to a meridian band passing over the Americas about 90° away from the site longitude, as reported in recent years for a large number of reversals. This short feature is lacking in the corresponding ocean-floor magnetic anomaly patterns, probably because of the difficulties of resolving polarity intervals as short as this one in ocean magnetic profiles.

    Notes: A revision of the magnetostratigraphy in the Valle Ricca (Monterotondo, Rome) Plio-Pleistocene section was carried out. This section, consisting mainly of blue-grey marly clays, was previously investigated for palaeomagnetic effects by Arias et al. (1980, 1990), who detected a normal polarity interval, close to a volcanic ash layer, which was correlated to the Reunion subchron. This interpretation conflicts, however, with new biostratigraphic data and palaeomagnetic observations. In order to investigate the possible origin of these discrepancies, we performed a detailed sampling for palaeomagnetic and rock-magnetic analyses in the controversial interval around the volcanic ash layer. The present results show strong variations in the rock-magnetic parameters and suggest significant changes in the magnetic mineralogy. Two levels with a high-intensity, low-temperature, normal component of magnetization were distinguished. At these two levels, the rock-magnetic parameters are typical of greigite, and a widespread occurrence of framboids of micron-sized iron sulphide grains was found by mineralogical analyses. A high-temperature reversed component of magnetization, carried by magnetite, was isolated for the whole interval investigated. We demonstrate that the previously recognized normal polarity interval is the effect of changes in the magnetic mineralogy and it does not represent a true reversal of the Earth's magnetic field. The origin of the low-temperature normal component of magnetization is discussed in light of the present knowledge about greigite formation and remanence acquisition.

    Description: Since its first field season (2006–2007), the ANDRILL (Antarctic Geological Drilling) program has implemented an innovative educational and public outreach (EPO) program known as ARISE (ANDRILL Research Immersion for Science Educators), which has actively involved a group of selected educators in every phase of the research, from participation in field activities to discussion of the scientific results. This method of research immersion has led to an impressive list of achievements, including the development of quality outreach initiatives and diverse educational materials, the involvement of a large number of schools using these resources, the creation of an international network of strongly motivated polar geoscience educators, and the realization of new and unexpected professional opportunities for educators. In Italy this program initiated a specific project (progettosmilla.it), in accordance with the objectives of the ARISE Program. Thanks to the use of both a wide range of instruments (online and material) and the network of personal relationships provided by teachers involved in the program, ARISE has resulted in many short-term accomplishments. The development of new partnerships with local and national institutions has led to a number of middle- and long-term processes, rarely seen in similar EPO projects, resulting in the attainment of other goals. Research immersion experiences promote close interactions between teachers and scientists, and provide the potential for accomplishing other long-term educational outcomes. The shared development of educational resources by scientists and educators through ARISE has created an opportunity to advance scientific education within schools and, through outreach, in the general populace.

    Description: Paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate changes that occurred during the late postevaporitic stage of the Mediterranean Basin in the Messinian foreland domain of the Adriatic region offer a new perspective on the relationship between orbital forcing and climate response. The magnetic susceptibility record of the Fonte dei Pulcini A section (Maiella Mountains, Italy) allows us to orbitally tune the record between 5.394 and 5.336 Ma and to temporally constrain the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate changes evidenced by quantitative paleontological (palynomorphs, ostracods, and calcareous nannofossils), stable isotope (d18O and d13C), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The base of the Fonte dei Pulcini A section is characterized by Paratethyan ostracods and dinocysts, which point to the late Messinian Lago-Mare biofacies (Loxocorniculina djafarovi zone) of the Mediterranean Messinian stratigraphy. From paleontological and geochemical (d18O) analyses, there is no evidence of a marine incursion in the Fonte dei Pulcini A section. The major changes in terms of paleodepth, paleosalinity, evaporation versus precipitation, aridity versus humidity, and reworking processes occurred in the upper part of the Fonte dei Pulcini A section, during the last Messinian insolation cycle (i-cycle 511/512), which is characterized by high-amplitude oscillations. In contrast, the lower part of the Fonte dei Pulcini A section, which was deposited during relatively low-amplitude insolation cycles, is characterized by more stable environmental conditions. Comparing summer insolation with the paleoenvironmental changes at the Fonte dei Pulcini A section, we identify delays of several thousands of years between orbital forcing and climate response.

    Description: Fiumicino town in the Tiber River delta, near Rome International Airport (Italy), is historically affected by large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ground and gas eruptions triggered by shallow drilling. While it is known that CO2 originates from carbonate thermometamorphism and/or mantle degassing, the origin of methane (CH4) associated with CO2 is uncertain and the outgassing spatial distribution is unknown. Combining isotope gas geochemistry, soil gas, and structural-stratigraphic analyses, we provide evidence for a hybrid fluid source system, classifiable as Sediment-Hosted Geothermal System (SHGS), where biotic CH4 from sedimentary rocks is carried by deep geothermic CO2 through active segments of a half-graben. Molecular and isotopic composition of CH4 and concentration of heavier alkanes (ethane and propane), obtained fromgas vents and soil gas throughout the delta area, reveal that thermogenic CH4 (up to 3.7 vol% in soil gas; δ13CCH4: 37 to 40‰ VPDB-Vienna Peedee Belemnite, and δ2HCH4: 162 to 203‰VSMOW - Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water in gas vents) prevails over possible microbial and abiotic components. The hydrocarbons likely result from known Meso-Cenozoic petroleum systems of the Latium Tyrrhenian coast. Overmaturation of source rocks or molecular fractionation induced by gas migration are likely responsible for increased C1/C2+ ratios. CO2 and CH4 soil gas anomalies are scattered along NW-SE and W-E alignments, which, based on borehole, geomorphologic, and structural-stratigraphic analyses, coincide with active faults of a half-graben that seems to have controlled the recent evolution of the Tiber delta. This SHGS can be a source of considerable greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere and hazards for humans and buildings.

    Description: Constraining the long-term variability and average of the Earth's magnetic fi eld strength is fundamental to understanding the characteristics and behavior of the geomagnetic field. Questions remain about the strength of the average field, and the relationship between strength and reversal frequency. The dispersion of data from key time intervals reflects the complexity in obtaining absolute paleointensity values. Here, we focus on the Cretaceous Normal Superchron (CNS; 121-84 Ma), during which there were no reversals. We present new results from 42 submarine basaltic glass (SBG) sites collected on the Nicoya Peninsula and Murci elago Islands, Costa Rica and new and revised 40Ar/39Ar ages along with biostratigraphic age constraints from previous studies that indicate ages ranging from 141 to 112 Ma. One site with a 40Ar/39Ar age of 135 +/-1.5 Ma (2 ) gave a reliable intensity result of 34 +/- 8 uT (equivalent to a paleomagnetic dipole moment, PDM, value of 88 +/- 20 ZAm2), while three sites between 121 and 112 vary from 21 +/- 1 to 34 +/- 4 uT (53 +/- 3 to 87 +/- 10 ZAm2) spanning the onset of the CNS. These results from the CNS are all higher than the long-term average of 42 ZAm2 and similar to data from Suhongtu (46-53 ZAm2) and the Troodos Ophiolite (81 ZAm2, reinterpreted using the same criteria of this study). Together with the reinterpreted data, the new Costa Rica results suggest that the strength of the geomagnetic eld was about the same before and after the onset of the CNS. Therefore, the data do not support a strict correlation between polarity interval length and the strength of the magnetic fi eld.

    Description: We present the first integrated tephrochronological study (major and trace elemental glass composition, Sr and Nd isotope analyses, and 40Ar/39Ar dating) for the last one tenth (∼82 m) of the ∼900 m-thick Quaternary lacustrine succession of the Fucino Basin, the largest and probably only Central Apennine intermountain tectonic depression that hosts a continuous lacustrine succession documenting the Plio-Quaternary sedimentary history up to historical times. Major element glass compositions, determined using a wavelength-dispersive electron microprobe (WDS-EMPA), yielded the geochemical fingerprinting needed for a reliable identification of most of the 23 stratigraphically ordered tephra layers under investigation. These include tephra from Italian volcanoes such as Campi Flegrei, Etna, Colli Albani, Ischia, Vico, Sabatini, and undefined volcanic sources in the Neapolitan area and Latium region. The recognition of key Mediterranean marker tephra layers (e.g. X-5 and X-6) is supported by trace element data acquired by Laser Ablation Inductively Couple Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The Sr and Nd isotope compositions of selected layers where also determined for circumscribing the volcanic source of distal tephra and for supporting correlations with individual eruptive units. We also propose a new, more expeditious covariation diagram (CaO/FeOtot vs Cl) for identifying the volcanic source of trachytic to phonolitic and tephrytic to phonolitic tephra, that are the most common compositions of pyroclastic rocks from volcanoes of Campania and Latium regions. Finally, we present five new 40Ar/39Ar age determinations, including a new, analytically well-supported, and more precise 40Ar/39Ar age for the widespread Y-7 tephra, and the first 40Ar/39Ar age determinations for one tephra from the Sabatini volcanic district (∼126 ka) and one tephra from Neapolitan volcanic area (Campi Flegrei?; ∼159 ka). These newly dated tephra are widely dispersed (e.g. Monticchio, southern Italy, Adriatic Sea and Lake Ohrid, Macedonia-Abania) and have thus the potential to become important Mediterranean MIS 5 and MIS 6 tephrochronological markers. Altogether the new geochemical data and 40Ar/39Ar ages precisely constrain the chronology of the investigated Fucino succession spanning the last ∼190 ka. In light of these results and by considering that this sedimentary succession possibly extends back to ∼2 Ma, Fucino is likely to provide a very long, continuous tephrostratigraphic record for the Mediterranean area and become a key node in the dense network of tephra correlations of this region.

    Description: New magnetobiostratigraphic data for the late Oligocene through early Miocene at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Hole 516F provide a significantly revised age model, which permits reevaluation of developments that led to the Mi-1 glacial event at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary. Our new high-resolution paleomagnetic study, which is supported by quantitative calcareous nannofossil and planktonic foraminiferal analyses, significantly refines previous age models for Oligocene-Miocene sediments from DSDP Hole 516F, with ages that are systematically younger than those previously determined. In some parts of the Oligocene, the discrepancy with previous studies exceeds 450 kyr. Based on this new age model, we infer a progressive increase in sedimentation rate and paleoproductivity between circa 23.9 Ma and circa 22.9 Ma, with the highest rate coinciding with the Mi-1 glacial event at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary. This productivity increase would have resulted in higher rates of carbon burial and in turn a drawdown of atmospheric CO2. Immediately afterward, an abrupt decrease in sedimentation rate and paleoproductivity suggests that the Mi-1 deglaciation was associated with decreased carbon input into the ocean. Elevated sedimentation rates are also documented at ~24.5 Ma, coincident with the Oi2D glacioeustatic event. The presence of volcanic material within the sediments during these glacial events is interpreted to have resulted from redeposition of sediment scoured from nearby sites on the Rio Grande Rise due to transient variations in bottom water flow patterns.
