Abstract: Five new heteroleptic zirconium and hafnium complexes were synthesized. The complexes carry chloro ligands as well as differently substituted phenoxy benzoxazole ligands [ HL1 = 2‐(2′‐hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole, HL2 = 2‐(2′‐hydroxynaphthyl)benzoxa‐zole, HL3 = 2‐(2′‐hydroxy‐3′,5′‐di‐tert‐butylphenyl)benzoxazole]. They were characterized by 1 H and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR spectroscopy as well as by elemental analyses and X‐ray diffraction experiments. The molecular structures in the crystals show distorted octahedral or capped trigonal prismatic coordination spheres. The intermolecular interactions influencing the packing patterns are mainly H ··· Cl contacts. For the hafnium complex [Cl 2 Hf( L3 ) 2 ] a dynamic behavior in solution was examined using temperature dependent 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The photo‐physical data show that in all cases fluorescence arises from a short‐lived excited state, the emission maxima being located in the blue spectral region.

Abstract: Cyclometalated Pd(II) complexes generally show inferior luminescence properties compared with their Pt(II) analogues. The established approach employing tridentate cyclometalating ligands has allowed us to create a series of square planar Pd(II) complexes [Pd( )X] from their protoligands H (2‐(6‐phenylpyridin‐2‐yl)thiazoles and ‐benzothiazoles; coligands X=Cl, Br, I) with extensive variations at the C arene group (phenyl, naphthyl, fluorenyl), the central N pyridine (pyridine, 4‐phenylpyridine, 3,5‐di‐ tert ‐butyl‐4‐phenylpyridine), and the peripheral N thiazole (thiazole, benzothiazole) to probe for structural factors that might enhance efficient luminescence. Long‐wavelength bands at 400–500 nm were assigned to transitions into mixed ligand‐centred/metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer (MLCT) states based on time‐dependent (TD)DFT calculations. The MLCT contributions are rather low, in agreement with relatively long lifetimes and high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 0.79 recorded in frozen glassy solvent matrices at 77 K along with emission bands showing pronounced vibrational progressions and peaking at about 520 nm. No photoluminescence was observed at 298 K in solution. Variation of the ligand allowed to shift the experimental absorption energies from about 2.4 to 2.7 eV, in good agreement with the electrochemical band gaps (2.58 to 2.81 eV). The theoretical absorption and emission spectra excellently reproduced the experimental trends.

Abstract: A family of luminescent Pt II complexes is presented capable of binding DNA duplexes via groove binding. The complexes are based on a tridentate ligand with N^N^C donor functionality bearing a triazole, a pyridine and a phenyl entity. The triazole group is used to attach a series of pendant dodecane tethers with differently charged functional head groups (neutral hydroxyl group, anionic sulfate group, cationic tetraalkylammonium group). The DNA‐binding behavior of the three resulting Pt II complexes was characterized by UV/Vis, CD, and luminescence spectroscopy as well as viscosity measurements and computational docking studies. The data clearly indicate groove binding interactions for all three complexes. In addition, a light‐switch effect was observed for the complexes upon the addition of DNA.
