Abstract: Humulus scandens, rich in flavonoids, is a traditional Chinese medicine. It is widely used in China to treat tuberculosis, dysentery and chronic colitis. In this study, the major active faction of Humulus scandens (H.S) was prepared. Then, its immunosuppressive effects and underlying mechanisms on T cell activation were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Results showed that H.S significantly inhibited the proliferation of splenocytes induced by concanavalin A, lipopolysaccharides, and mixed-lymphocyte reaction in vitro. Additionally, H.S could dramatically suppress the proliferation and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) production from T cells stimulated by anti-CD3 and anti-CD28. Flow cytometric results confirmed that H.S could suppress the differentiation of IFN-γ-producing type 1 helper T cells (Th1). Furthermore, using ovalbumin immunization-induced T cell reaction and CD4 + T-cell-mediated delayed type hypersensitivity reaction, H.S the immunosuppressive effects of H.S was also demonstrated in vivo. Western blot results showed that H.S could impede the activation of both Erk1/2 and P38 in primary T cells triggered by anti-CD3/28. Collectively, the active fraction of H.S showed promising immunosuppressive activities both in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract: Unsupervised image segmentation is a fundamental but challenging problem in computer vision. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised segmentation algorithm, which could find diverse applications in pattern recognition, particularly in computer vision. The algorithm, named Two-stage Fuzzy c-means Hybrid Approach (TFHA), adaptively clusters image pixels according to their multichannel Gabor responses taken at multiple scales and orientations. In the first stage, the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm is applied for intelligent estimation of centroid number and initialization of cluster centroids, which endows the novel segmentation algorithm with adaptivity. To improve the efficiency of the algorithm, we utilize the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) feature extracted at the hyperpixel level instead of the pixel level to estimate centroid number and hyperpixel-cluster memberships, which are used as initialization parameters of the following main clustering stage to reduce the computational cost while keeping the segmentation performance in terms of accuracy close to original one. Then, in the second stage, the FCM algorithm is utilized again at the pixel level to improve the compactness of the clusters forming final homogeneous regions. To examine the performance of the proposed algorithm, extensive experiments were conducted and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a very effective segmentation results and computational behavior, decreases the execution time and increases the quality of segmentation results, compared with the state-of-the-art segmentation methods recently proposed in the literature.

Abstract: Since meshfree particle methods have advantages on simulating the problems involving extremely large deformations, fractures etc., they become attractive options to be used in the hierarchical multiscale modeling to approximate a large number of atoms. We propose a nanoscale meshfree particle method with the implementation of the quasicontinuum technique in this paper. The intrinsic properties of the material associated with each particle will be sought from the atomic level via the Cauchy-Born rule. The studies of a nano beam and a nano plate with a central crack show that such a hierarchical modeling can be beneficial from the advantages of meshfree particle methods.

Abstract: Novel ZnIn 2 S 4 /FeUiO-66 was synthesized by solvothermal reaction. The photocatalytic performance of ZnIn 2 S 4 /FeUiO-66 was better than ZnIn 2 S 4 and FeUiO-66 for the photodegradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. The experiment results showed that the 20% ZnIn 2 S 4 /FeUiO-66 exhibited the optimal photocatalytic performance. The •O 2– and h + played an important role for the degradation.
