Abstract: Lubrication plays an important role in reducing prosthetic wear. Time-dependent elastohydrodynamic lubrication simulation for total knee replacements was carried out under physiological loading and motions of a gait cycle. In numerical implement, a simplified ellipsoid-on-plane configuration was introduced to represent the artificial knee joint. Load and motions came from ISO standard, and both anterior–posterior displacement and flexion–extension rotation were considered to realize sliding and rolling motions of the knee. The governing Reynolds and elasticity equations were solved simultaneously using the multigrid technique. The elastic deformation was calculated based on the constrained column model. The results show that: (i) under the combination of entraining and squeeze-film actions throughout the walking cycle, the predicted central film thickness decreases during stance phase and keeps a relatively larger value in swing phase; (ii) high joint conformity helps to reduce hydrodynamic pressure and increase lubrication film thickness; (iii) the thickness of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene layer and its properties also have influence on the lubrication performance in artificial knee replacement. Based on the aforementioned EHL analysis, potential surface damage of knee implants can be further evaluated.

Abstract: A two-phase model is introduced to extract clinically useful information from medical MR images. In the preprocessing phase, a refined bias correction method is adopted to reduce the influence of intensity inhomogeneity by removing the bias field, which paves the way for improving the subsequent segmentation accuracy. During image segmentation process, a novel adaptive level set technique is designed to capture the boundary of desired region. By virtue of adaptive driving term, the external force automatically changes its propagating direction when evolving curve goes through object boundary, which effectively prevents the final results deviating from correct position. Moreover, insensitivity to initial contour also enables its automatic applications. Experiments on synthetic and real MR images demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of the proposed method.

Abstract: A novel model for predicting the fatigue crack growth had been developed based on the concept of the fatigue damage accumulation. Fatigue crack growth was considered as a process of continuous crack nucleation. The crack tip failed to form a fresh crack while the accumulative fatigue damage reached the critical damage. A simplified model of the general crack growth model was proposed with the assumption that the damage zone can be divided into many different zones and each zone had the same crack growth rate. The model was applied to predict the crack growth of the compact specimen made of 16MnR steel under the constant amplitude loading. The predicted crack growth rate was in excellent agreement with the experimental observations.

Abstract: Viability of cancer cell is an important indicator of physiological state and function of cells, which can be effected by the change of pH in the medium solution, due to the increase of carbon oxide and lactic acid caused by respiration. Although many methods have been developed to detect the viability of cells, mostly based on cytochemical staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology are time consuming. In this paper, an electronic device was made by thermal reduced graphene oxide (RGO) for detection of cancer cell viability in real-time. This electronic device could be used to monitor the metabolic activity and viability of cancer cells based on the change in pH value. As the pH decreases, colon cancer cells loose viability and the current decreases. This RGO device is simple, sensitive and label-free and could serve as a platform for detection of cells and drug testing.

Abstract: A great number of real-world problems can be associated with multi-criteria decision-making. These problems are often characterized by a high degree of uncertainty. Intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs) are a generalized form of an ordinal fuzzy set to deal with this natural uncertainty. In this paper, we propose a hybrid version of the intuitionistic fuzzy ELECTRE based on VIKOR method, which was never considered before. The advantage and strengths of the intuitionistic fuzzy ELECTRE based on VIKOR method as decision aid technique and IFS as an uncertain framework make the proposed method a suitable choice in solving practical problems. Finally, a numerical example for engineering manager choice is given to illustrate the application of proposed method. The paper also gives a special view of point to the research along IFSs: It can be viewed as a kind of factorial scalar theory in factor space, which helps the authors to complete the paper with clear ideas.
