Abstract: Laser ranging satellites have proved their efficiency for high precision testing of the effect of frame-dragging, one of the remarkable predictions of General Relativity. The analysis of the randomness properties of the residuals of LAGEOS and LAGEOS 2 satellites reveals the role of the thermal thrust — Yarkovsky effect — on the satellite which was in the orbit for longer period (LAGEOS). We also compute Earth’s tidal modes affecting the satellite LARES. The recently obtained 5% accuracy limit reached for the frame dragging effect based on the 3.5 year data of LARES analyzed together with those of LAGEOS satellites and using the Earth gravity model of GRACE satellite, is also represented.

Abstract: The influence of hypersonic waves excited in a single crystal is investigated on the process of electron–positron pair creation by high-energy photons. The coherent part of the corresponding differential cross-section is derived as a function of the amplitude and wave number of the hypersound. The values of the parameters are specified for which the latter affects remarkably on the pair creation cross-section. It is shown that under certain conditions the presence of hypersonic waves can result in enhancement of the process cross-section.

Abstract: Transformation (reflection and transmission) of sound and electromagnetic waves are considered in non-stationary media, properties of which abruptly change in time. Reflection and transmission coefficients for both amplitudes and intensities of sound and electromagnetic waves are obtained. Quantitative relations between the reflection and transmission coefficients for both sound and electromagnetic waves are given. The sum of the energy flux reflection and transmission coefficients for both types of waves is not equal to one (for sound waves it is greater than one). The energy of both waves is not conserved, that is, exchange of the energy occurs between the corresponding waves and medium. As a result, the sound wave obtains a notable property: the transmitting wave carries energy equal to the sum of the energies of the incident and reflected waves. A possibility of the amplification of sound waves and transformation of their frequencies is illustrated.

Abstract: We study inhomogeneities in the distribution of the excursion sets in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature maps obtained by the three years survey of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). At temperature thresholds |T| = 90 μ K , the distributions of the excursion sets with over 200 pixels are concentrated in two regions, nearly at the antipodes, with galactic coordinates l = 94.7°, b = 34.4° and l = 279.8°, b = -29.2°. The centers of these two regions drift towards the equator when the temperature threshold is increased. The centers are located close to one of the vectors of ℓ = 3 multipole. The two patterns of the substructures in the distribution of the excursion sets are mirrored, with χ 2 = 0.7–1.5. There is no obvious origin of this effect in the noise structure of WMAP, and there is no evidence for a dependence on the galactic cut. Would this effect be cosmological, it could be an indication of an anomalously large component of horizon-size density perturbations, independent of one of the spatial coordinates, and/or of a non-trivial slab-like spatial topology of the Universe.

Abstract: We investigate the radiation from a charged particle rotating around a dielectric cylinder with a negative real part of dielectric permittivity. For the general case of frequency dispersion in dielectric permittivity, expressions are derived for the electric and magnetic fields and for the angular density of the radiation intensity on a given harmonic. Compared with the case of a cylinder with a positive real part of the permittivity, new interesting features arise in the nonrelativistic limit and for the radiation at small angles with respect to the cylinder axis. Another feature is the appearance of sharp narrow peaks in the angular density of the radiation intensity for large harmonics. We analytically estimate the height, width and the location of these peaks. The influence of the imaginary part of dielectric permittivity on the characteristics of the peaks is discussed. The analytical results are illustrated by numerical examples. We show that the radiation intensity on a given harmonic, integrated over the angles, can be essentially amplified by the presence of the cylinder.
