Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the behavior of conformal field theories interacting at a single point. The edge states of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) system give rise to a particular representation of a chiral Kac–Moody current algebra. We show that in the case of QHE systems interacting at one point we obtain a "twisted" representation of the current algebra. The condition for stationarity of currents is the same as the classical Kirchoff's law applied to the currents at the interaction point. We find that in the case of two discs touching at one point, since the currents are chiral, they are not stationary and one obtains current oscillations between the two discs. We determine the frequency of these oscillations in terms of an effective parameter characterizing the interaction. The chiral conformal field theories can be represented in terms of bosonic Lagrangians with a boundary interaction. We discuss how these one-point interactions can be represented as boundary conditions on fields, and how the requirement of chirality leads to restrictions on the interactions described by these Lagrangians. By gauging these models we find that the theory is naturally coupled to a Chern–Simons gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions, and this coupling is completely determined by the requirement of anomaly cancellation.

Abstract: Compactification of the field-theory limit of the E 8 × E′ 8 heterotic string on six-dimensional coset manifolds is discussed, with specific reference to maintaining four-dimensional super-symmetry. By choosing a torsion proportional to the background value of the three-index field H mnp occurring in the theory it is possible to satisfy the condition of SU(3) holonomy necessary for supersymmetry. However, in all cases considered, it is found impossible to satisfy all the remaining conditions for supersymmetry. If gaugino condensation is assumed to occur, it is possible to preserve supersymmetry satisfying all the modified requirements of supersymmetry for the spaces SU (3)/ U (1) × U (1), G 2 / SU (3) and SO (5)/ SU (2) × U (1). The question of chiral fermions is examined in these cases using the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. Background gauge fields, which correspond to different numbers of generations of chiral fermions, are constructed explicitly. In all these cases the low-energy symmetry group is E 6 × E′ 8 .

Abstract: This paper describes the design and implementation of simple fuzzy logic controller (SFLC) for a nonlinear quasi-resonant converter (QRC). It is shown that the two-dimensional rule table of conventional FLCs (CFLCs) used in power converters can be reduced to one-dimensional rule table using SFLC. The proposed SFLC reduces the memory space and computing time of the fuzzy algorithm. The tuning of scaling factors and the generation of fuzzy rules are also easier when compared with CFLC. As a result, realizing SFLC in a Microcontroller or Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is made simple. The proposed controller structure is universal and it can be directly applied to any of the dc–dc converter topologies. In this paper, the application of SFLC is successfully verified for the voltage control of Extended Period (EP)-ZCS/ZVS-QRC through simulation and experimental studies using TMS320F2407A Processor. The ability of SFLC, compared to CFLC, to achieve good transient response for load variations and supply disturbances is demonstrated.

Abstract: We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking of O(3) scalar field on a fuzzy sphere [Formula: see text]. We find that the fluctuations in the background of topological configurations are finite. This is in contrast to the fluctuations around a uniform configuration which diverge, due to Mermin–Wagner–Hohenberg–Coleman theorem, leading to the decay of the condensate. Interesting implications of enhanced topological stability of the configurations are pointed out.

Abstract: We study and analyse the questions regarding breakdown of global symmetry on noncommutative sphere. We demonstrate this by considering a complex scalar field on a fuzzy sphere and isolating Goldstone modes. We discuss the role of nonlocal interactions present in these through geometrical considerations.

Abstract: We study finite temperature phase transition of neutral scalar field on a fuzzy sphere using Monte Carlo simulations. We work with the zero mode in the temporal directions, while the effects of the higher modes are taken care by the temperature dependence of r. In the numerical calculations we use "pseudo-heatbath" method which reduces the auto-correlation considerably. Our results agree with the conventional calculations. We report some new results which show the presence of meta-stable states, first order symmetry breaking transition and existence of multiple triple points in the phase diagram..

Abstract: The flow dynamics through the peripheral and hinge regions of a bi-leaflet mechanical heart valve are complex and result in abnormally high shear stresses particularly during the closing phase of the valve function. It has been observed that the late stages of closure are more significant in the dynamics of platelet activation; therefore, the later stages of closure are simulated by solving the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations using an Eulerian Levelset-based sharp interface Cartesian grid method. Using a fixed Cartesian mesh incorporating local mesh refinement for solution accuracy and efficiency, the flow-through within a recessed hinge design and an open pivot hinge design is compared. Platelets are modeled as point particles by Lagrangian particle tracking algorithm with one way coupling. A dilute particle flow is assumed and particle–particle interactions are neglected. It was observed that the hinge region of the open pivot valve indicated a lower potential for activation of platelets compared to that in valves with a recessed hinge design.
