Abstract: It is impossible to directly analyze the microstructure of spin-valve multilayers based on Ni, Fe, Cu and Mn by a conventional X-ray diffraction technique because the lattice parameter and atomic scattering factors of them are very close. To solve this problem, we use an X-ray anomalous diffraction technique to characterize the microstructures of the [ Ni 80 Fe 20 / Fe 50 Mn 50 ] 15 and [ Ni 80 Fe 20 / Cu ] 15 superlattice systems. The results show that more diffraction peaks and higher intensity in the reflectivity profile are observed when the incident energy is close to the absorption edge of the lighter element (Mn) in [ Ni 80 Fe 20 / Fe 50 Mn 50 ] 15 multilayer systems and to the absorption edge of the heavier element (Cu) in the [ Ni 80 Fe 20 / Cu ] 15 multilayer systems. The interface and periodic structure of [ Ni 80 Fe 20 / Fe 50 Mn 50 ] 15 are more perfect than that of the [ Ni 80 Fe 20 / Cu ] 15 superlattices. The above results are discussed in this paper.

Abstract: In this talk I will review PHOBOS data on charged particle multiplicities, obtained in Au + Au and d + Au collisions at RHIC. The general features of the Au + Au pseudorapidity distributions results will be discussed and compared to those of [Formula: see text] collisions. The total charged particle multiplicity, scaled by the number of participant pairs, is observed to be about 40% higher in Au + Au collisions than in [Formula: see text] and d + Au systems, but, surprisingly at the same level of e + e - collisions. Limiting fragmentation scaling is seen to be obeyed in Au + Au collisions.

Abstract: The concentrated fiber suspensions in a simple shear flow are simulated numerically by taking into account the hydrodynamic interactions and fiber–fiber mechanical contacts. The orientation probability distribution of fibers, the specific viscosity and the first normal stress difference are obtained. The comparison of the specific viscosity to experimental data is made and the agreement is good. The results show that initially randomly-oriented fibers are re-oriented in the flow direction. The hydrodynamic interactions and fiber–fiber mechanical contacts result in an increase in the spread of the orientation distribution and asymmetric orientation distribution about the flow direction. Fiber's alignment with the flow direction becomes more obvious with an increasing shear rate. In a concentrated fiber suspension, the force induced by the fiber–fiber mechanical contact plays a more important role than that induced by hydrodynamic interactions. The specific viscosity of fiber suspension grows with concentration for various aspect ratios. For a fixed concentration, the larger the aspect ratio is, the higher the specific viscosity is. The specific viscosity calculated by taking into account both hydrodynamic interactions and fiber–fiber mechanical contacts is larger than that only taking into account the fiber–fiber mechanical contacts. The effect of aspect ratio on the first normal stress difference is more obvious at high concentration. Taking into account the hydrodynamic interactions or not will make a big difference in the first normal stress difference.

Abstract: An attempt for modification of carbon nitride material by introduction of Al to form a ternary Al-C-N compound in a thin film deposited using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted DC magnetron sputtering is reported. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) is used for in-situ observation and identification of reactive species. The films were characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). The results indicate that C-N bond is formed in the plasma. The XPS narrow scam spectra confirm the existence of C-Al, sp 2 C-N and sp 3 C-N bonds. Elemental proportion of carbon increases with the CH 4 /N 2 flow rate ratio, and has a tendency to saturate. The film is dominated by c-AlN (111), mixed with Al 4 C 3 and AlCN ternary compound.

Abstract: Ta-C and iron containing amorphous carbon (a-C:Fe) films were deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc technique. The influences of Fe contents on the wettability of the films were investigated in terms of surface energy. The surface energy of a-C:Fe films was determined by the contact angle measurement. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray induced photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to analyze the origin of the variation of surface energy with various Fe content. It is found that the contact angle for water increases significantly after incorporating Fe into the films and the films become hydrophobic. The roughness of these films has a little effect on the contact angle. The surface energy is reduced after incorporating Fe into the a-C film which is due to the reduction of both dispersive and polar component. The reduction in dispersive component is ascribed to the decrease of atomic density of the a-C:Fe films due to the increase in sp 2 bonded carbon. The absorption of oxygen on the surface play an important role in the reduction of polar component for the a-C:Fe films. It is proposed that such network as (C a -O-Fe)-O-(Fe-O-C a ) may be formed and responsible for the reduction of polar component.
