Description: W/O/W and W/O emulsions of paraffin oil were prepared with Span 80 (sorbitan monooleate)/Tween 80 (polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate) or SG-6 (polyethylene glycol monostearate), respectively. The physical characters and absorption of toluene gas in these emulsions were investigated to evaluate the influence of emulsifier dosage and oil/water ratio. Among the W/O/W emulsions, the formulas of 6:4 oil-water ratio + 2% emulsifiers and 5:5 oil-water ratio + 2% emulsifiers both provided high stabilities and low viscosities. The absorption of toluene gas in the two emulsions was excellent with few foams existing during the absorption. Though the W/O emulsions with 2% ~5 % SG-6 were of high stability, high viscosities strongly limited their application as VOCs absorbents. Magnified photos indicated that stable emulsions consisted of small and uniform droplets, and some emulsions underwent mild demulsification after the absorption.
