Notes: Modification of properties of an addition-curing polyisoimide prepolymer is achieved by the incorporation of small metal particles. No evidence for the modification of the cure chemistry of the prepolymer is observed. Physical modification of the system is observed in electrical, dynamic mechanical, and adhesive properties. Compositions containing various volume fractions of metal and polymer were prepared. Two different molecular weights of prepolymer were studied. Samples were prepared by fabricating single overlap adhesive specimens to aluminum. These lap shear specimens were then used for the electrical and adhesive properties of the material. The electrical properties improved markedly at above 25 volume percent metal loading. The adhesive properties to aluminum showed a maximum at 20-25 volume percent loading. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to examine adhesive failure surfaces.

Notes: The solubility of a series of para-linked, substituted phenyl, biphenyl, terphenyl, and quaterphenyl polyamides is reported. Most of these polymers are soluble in amide solvents without lithium chloride, and several are soluble in ethers and/or ketones. The results indicate that solubility in this class of polymers is affected by the position, polarizability and size of the substituents, enantiomeric purity, and the number of non-coplanar biphenyl rings per repeat unit.

Notes: The separation of model mixtures of nitrated diphenylamine and nitrated aniline via supercritical fluid chromatography employing both capillary and packed columns is described. With highly deactivated stationary phases each mixture could be separated with 100% CO2 pressure programmed. Peak identification and peak purity were afforded by on-line Fourier transform infrared spectrometric detection. Nitrosoaniline derivatives were observed via FTIR to have been converted to nitro derivatives on storage.

Notes: Several agricultural compounds which are used as herbicide precursors have been analyzed by SFC and are detected on-line via a flow cell FT-IR interface. A mixture of ureas is separated on a microbore packed column; while a mixture of benzamides and anilides and a mixture of sulfonamides are separated on capillary columns. The use of 100% CO2 as the mobile phase enables an infrared spectrum of each eluting analyte to be obtained on-line with good signal to noise ratio. The urea mixture is also separated with a conventional cyanopropyl bonded phase analytical scale packed column using a methanol-modified CO2 mobile phase and UV detection. The separations achieved with and without modifier are compared.

Notes: In a recent communication, we demonstrated that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) lowers basal while it ablates interleukin-1β( (IL-1β) and transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) upregulated lysyl oxidase (LO) mRNA levels. Correspondingly, PGE2 increases cyclooxygenase-1 (COX1) mRNA in diploid, human embryo lung fibroblasts (IMR90) [Roy et al., 1996]. We now report that these actions by PGE2 are routed through cAMP via the PGE2, EP2 receptor. Among the PGE2 receptor types, the IMR90 predominantly express the EP2 mRNA. These cells also express EP3 and EP4 mRNA at comparatively low levels. Northern blot analyses show that 11-deoxy PGE1, an EP2/EP4 agonist, emulates the action of PGE2. In a similar manner to PGE2, 11-deoxy PGE1 decreases basal and TGF-β induced type I collagen α1 (COL) mRNA, basal and IL-1β induced LO mRNA while it increases COX1 mRNA. Sulprostone, an EP3/EP1 agonist, has no effect on the expression of these three genes. Forskolin, an adenylate cyclase activator, acts in a very similar manner to PGE2or 11-deoxy PGE1. It suppresses both basal and TGF-β induced COL mRNA levels. Both PGE2 and 11-deoxy PGE1 increase cAMP to a level comparable with forskolin. The role of the EP2 receptor in controlling collagen production is further underscored in the immortalized Rat-1 fibroblasts, derived from Fischer rat embryos, which do not express detectable EP2 mRNA. In these cells, PGE2 has little effect on COL mRNA level, whereas forskolin increases it. Furthermore, forskolin increases cAMP level in Rat-1 cells, whereas PGE2 does not. Overall, these results illustrate that much of the PGE2 action on the expression of COL, LO, and COX1 genes is mediated through the EP2 receptor and a subsequent increase in intracellular cAMP. J. Notes: High-temperature polyimide films with metallic gold surfaces can be fabricated by the incorporation of a soluble metal salt into a solution of polyamic acid. Thermal treatment of these solutions produces the polyimide, decomposes the metal salt to metallic gold, and promotes the formation and growth of the metallized surface. What appeared to be a continuous metallic surface was actually composed of large gold aggregates. It is suspected that the formation of colloidal gold during the initial thermal treatment provides precursors to the large metal aggregates. Thermal treatment has been shown to influence the size and distribution of the aggregates. The shape of the aggregates suggests that diffusion-limited aggregation may be responsible for the unique shape of some of the gold aggregates.
