Notes: Hyperemia associated with an inflammatory response has been investigated in rats, by using four different experimental models, i.e., “positive” and “negative” polymer implants from the pharmacopea, operative control, and abscess induced by turpentine oil. 133Xenon clearance, infrared thermography and Laser Doppler Flowmetry (LDF) were used to monitor the subcutaneous local hemodynamic changes from 1 to 40 postoperative days. LDF proved to be a sensitive, reproducible method, able to discriminate positive from negative implants already at the 3rd postoperative day and up to 40 days. This increased local blood flow was also visualized at the site of positive implants at the 14th and 21st postoperative days by means of 133Xe Clearance. Additional information obtained by infrared thermography allowed discrimination between positive implants and control sites but only at the very early stage (1 to 3 days). The significance of the different data collected by the three techniques was correlated with histological events occurring at the different implant sites. LDF may therefore represent a useful technique for noninvasive semiquantitative assessment of tissue response to biomaterials.

Notes: The equatorial or axial configurational assignment of stereisomeric epoxyspirocyclohexanes, derived from the reaction of 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone with the anion of 2-chloropropionitrile, has been determined by comparing the 13C chemical shifts of these compounds with those of the parent compounds, of known configuration, and resulting from the condensation of the anion of chloracetonitrile with 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone. A high field shift is observed for the cyclohexane ring carbons on going from the equatorial to the axial epoxide.

Notes: High-resolution Raman spectra of isotopically pure 35Cl2 were recorded using UV argon ion laser radiation of 275.4, 300.3, 302.4 and 305.5 nm. Overtone progressions could be observed for excitation with 300.3, 302.4 and 305.5 nm radiation. All overtone transitions could be simulated satisfactorily using both the traditional Kramers-Heisenberg-Dirac equation and time-dependent quantum theory. The results obtained for 35Cl2 are compared to those derived earlier for I2 and Br2. The spectral features of the fundamental band for excitation in the UV region can be explained by assuming a destructive interference effect between resonant and non-resonant Raman scattering resulting from adjacent high-energy electronic states.

Description: Seropositivity to cutaneous human papillomavirus (HPV) β types and β-HPV DNA in eyebrow (EB) hairs have been associated with an increased risk of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) 1,2 . While immunocompromised individuals 3 have an increased susceptibility to cutaneous HPV infection, factors predisposing to β-HPV infection among immunocompetent individuals are largely unknown. We examined genetic factors associated with cutaneous β-HPV infection in cancer-free, immunocompetent individuals and assessed if the same genetic factors were associated with SCC. Description: In situ secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analyses of δ7Li, Li/Ca, and Mg/Ca were performed on five synthetic aragonite samples precipitated from seawater at 25°C at different rates. The compositions of δ7Li in bulk aragonites and experimental fluids were measured by multicollector inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Both techniques yielded similar δ7Li in aragonite when SIMS analyses were corrected to calcium carbonate reference materials. Fractionation factors α7Li/6Li range from 0.9895 to 0.9923, which translates to a fractionation between aragonite and fluid from −10.5‰ to −7.7‰. The within-sample δ7Li range determined by SIMS is up to 27‰, exceeding the difference between bulk δ7Li analyses of different aragonite precipitates. Moreover, the centers of aragonite hemispherical bundles (spherulites) are enriched in Li/Ca and Mg/Ca relative to spherulite fibers by up to factors of 2 and 8, respectively. The Li/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios of spherulite fibers increase with aragonite precipitation rate. These results suggest that precipitation rate is a potentially important consideration when using Li isotopes and elemental ratios in natural carbonates as a proxy for seawater composition and temperature.

Description: [1]  Constraining the pre-Neogene history of the Puna plateau is crucial for establishing the initial conditions that attended the early stage evolution of the southern extent of the Andean plateau. We apply high- to low-temperature thermochronology data from plutonic rocks in northwestern Argentina to quantify the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and early Tertiary cooling history of the Andean crust. U-Pb crystallization ages of zircons indicate that pluton intrusion occurred during the early mid-Ordovician (490–470 Ma) and the late Jurassic (160–150 Ma). Lower-temperature cooling histories from 40 Ar/ 39 Ar analyses of K-feldspar vary substantially. Basement rocks underlying the western Puna resided at temperatures below 200°C (〈6 km depth) since the Devonian (∼400 Ma). In contrast, basement rocks underlying the southeastern Puna were hotter (∼200–300°C) throughout the Paleozoic and Jurassic and cooled to temperatures of 〈200°C by ∼120 Ma. The southeastern Puna basement records a rapid cooling phase coeval with active extension of the Cretaceous Salta rift at ∼160–100 Ma that we associate with tectonic faulting and lithospheric thinning. The northeastern Puna experienced protracted cooling until the late Cretaceous with temperatures 〈200°C during the Paleocene. Higher cooling rates between 78 and 55 Ma are associated with thermal subsidence during the postrift stage of the Salta rift and/or shortening-related flexural subsidence. Accelerated cooling and deformation during the Eocene was focused within a narrow zone along the eastern Puna/Eastern Cordillera transition that coincides with Paleozoic/Mesozoic structural and thermal boundaries. Our results constrain regional erosion-induced cooling throughout the Cenozoic to have been less than ∼150°C, which implies total Cenozoic denudation of 〈6–4 km.
