Description / Table of Contents:
Five crystalline phases of composition SiO2 · P2O5 and nearly related structures are described. Two fo these have monoclinic, one orthorhombic, one cubic. and one probably tetragonal symmetry. There are two more phases of the same composition and hexagonal and pseudohexagonal symmetry, respectively. The structures of these two phases show near relations with each other but not so much with the other five phases. In addition to these seven SiO2 · P2O5 phases there is a hexagonal one of varying composition whose formula is probably Si1+5xP4(7-x)O72 with ∼2.5 〈 × 〈 ∼3.5. This phase range includes the compositions 3 SiO2 · 2 P2O5 [= Si3(PO4)4] and 2 SiO2 · P2O5 [= Si2P2O9]. The lattice constants of this latter phase vary only slightly with the temperature of synthesis of the samples.Lattice constants, mostly from single crystal X-ray diagrams and crystal optical data, of the various phases are given and structural relations between them discussed. Several more phases could not yet be characterized sufficiently.
Notes:
